Warwickshire Lookup Requests / 1891 and 1901 census - William Mulgrue
« on: Wednesday 17 August 05 10:28 BST (UK)  »
Looking for William Mulgrue or Mulgrew, possibly born in India c1880 but living in UK, probably Birmingham area, at the time of one or both of these censuses.  He later moved to Gloucestershire.  Can anyone with these census records help with an address and other family members, please?  :)

Lancashire / New Lancs Certificate Centre
« on: Saturday 13 August 05 09:59 BST (UK)  »
I recently sent to Burnley for a birth certificate, having received certs from them before, and discovered that a new Lancs Certificate Centre has been set up, which is experiencing start-up problems.  I received a letter explaining that there would be delays on providing certificates for family historians because of the demand from living persons for certs for their passports.  :o  As the letter did not explain which areas were covered by this centre, people writing for certificates for other Lancs towns may have the same experience.

The address for the centre is:

Lancashire Registration Service
Certificate Services
Quayside Court
Chain Caul Way
Preston PR2 2ZP
Tel: 01772 326881

Cheques were previously made out to LCC, so presumably no change there.

Huntingdonshire / Re: Shoemakers in Hunts
« on: Friday 12 August 05 20:00 BST (UK)  »
Thanks, Annie.  G-g-grandfather lived and worked in the little village of Easton, as did two of his cordwaining sons, while another moved to Great Paxton.  Easton doesn't have its own site, but I'll look for Gt Paxton.  If only Hunts R O wasn't so far away!  The FHS seems a better bet.  Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Gill  :)

Gloucestershire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Etsell family of Newnham

Thanks very much, Joe.  This will be a great help.  It's interesting to see that George Etsell junior moved to Evesham.  Still, Newnham's a small place, perhaps there wasn't room for two bakers there.

Regards,
Gill  :)

Occupation Interests / Shoemakers in Hunts
« on: Friday 12 August 05 16:46 BST (UK)  »
I have several ancestors who were shoemakers in Hunts in the 19th century.  Does anyone know of records kept of shoemakers and their apprentices? One of them spent several years in London  between the 1860 and 1870 censuses and may have been apprenticed there, too.

May have misled you here.  :-[  The information came from the familysearch website and lists George Etsell age 39 living at Bakers Road, Eastbourne with his family, however he moved to Newnham at some point after that date, presumably with his his wife Catherine and children George Thomas, Fanny Louisa, William and Frances.  Frances was married at Newnham Church in 1906.  Some of them will probably be on the 1901 for Newnham, which I don't have.

Regards, Gill.

Looking for information about the Etsell family who were living in Newnham in 1881.  George Etsell was a baker, and had a confectionery business there. :)

One Name Studies: A to G / FAREY, FAIRY, FAIREY
« on: Friday 29 July 05 08:33 BST (UK)  »
Am stuck in 1776 with the birth in Gt Catworth of my ancestor William Farey, married to Mary Bassett, born Swavesey.  With various spellings of the name, the family lived in Hunts around the Easton, Ellington and Spaldwick area, and many of them were shoemakers.  William and Mary had 6 children, including my g-g-grandfather John, born 1806.  Am looking for descendants of these children James 1798, Sarah 1801, Joseph 1803, Hannah 1807 and Elizabeth 1818. Also would like to get back earlier than 1776 and would welcome any help with this.
