Hi Poppy

From JJ and Jennifer's info above...

There are a number of online trees on a/try...only accessible via subscription...such as this one http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/47120322/person/6698224771?ssrc=

Will say that after the death of Joseph, Margaret's father, in 1906, wife Agnes (maiden surname Hetherington) and children look to have moved down to the Bolton area before 1911. Possibly your Margaret was a twin to Agnes?

Agnes Hetherington/Rutherford likely died back in Dumfrieshire/Scotland in 1940. Easy enough for you to check on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (it is the only entry).

To help, see also www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=406053.0 and www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=406776.0 (old posts).

Monica

Many Thanks to Monica & Jennifer for your replies much appreciated.

Trying to find more on the family trees and other links you have found, all your help I know is getting me closer to finally one day see a photo of my Father William Gregson.

Thank you JJen
Oh my ! You work so quick
This is great information for us. Alfred Gregson died before 1935 as deceased on the marriage certificate of William to Vera Thorn but I do not know the exact date of death, I would like to find this so I can apply for the record. I wonder if any connection to WW1 as he was quite young ?

I will try to apply for the marriage certificate to James Cookson as this could give further info on William.

Much more to discover on the Rutherford`s from your information, Many Thanks
Kind Regards

If you were to open http://www.searchelectoralroll.co.uk/Electoral_Roll_Search.asp and then search for Gregson in Salisbury, you may find the man living at the address containing the number 59 in the list of free results may be very helpful with your enquiries.
Many Thanks  :)
I am trying but getting no results

Hi all
this is my first posting
I am hoping for help & info on my late father who I sadly never knew. His name was W Gregson and he was a private in the second world war. My mother unfortunately found it to difficult to talk about him, as I had great respect for her I never asked again. This sadly meant that now late in my life I know very little about him or his family history.

I have attached a Marconi social club card from chelmsford, essex where they meet,  which is the only item I found following my mothers death, this is all I have of his handwriting.
The information is he was a temporary member on the 19th March 1942 and gives an address of 90 Ashley Road, Salisbury, Wiltshire. Following research on the address we believe he was a lodger.

If anyone could help please I would be forever grateful, after many decades of searching I still remain hopeful to find out more about him, and to see a photo of him.
many thanks

I note a William Gregson married a Vera A. M. Thorn (born 1916) Sept.quarter 1935 Salisbury and 3 sons were born between 1936 and 1940 (elder son died 1939) and a daughter in 1945.   His wife appears to have remarried at Salisbury in 1955  (and also died there) - whether divorced or widowed one can only speculate.   Certainly cannot see a death for this William Gregson in Salisbury at all so perhaps they divorced and he moved away.  His children continue to live in Salisbury per electoral rolls.

Could this possibly be Private W Gregson I wonder?  Have you ever considered this avenue?

Annette

Chelmsford 3488 looks like a telephone number to me. The other numbers look like booking or meeting times e.g 0940-1020

Many Thanks  :)
Did they have ex directory in 1942 ?. I have just finished the whole directory for Chelmsford in 1942 could not find 3488.

Kind regards

Is there any information about him on your birth certificate?

An earlier request on another board mentions that he was believed to be in the Royal Corps of Signals.

Thank you for your reply your time is much appreciated   :)

The Royal Corps of Signals was mentioned by my Mother, but I can not find a W Gregson serving then.

As Private was on the Marconi Card would this mean he must have been in the Army only ? and not RAF or Navy.

Kind Regards
