Armed Forces / Re: Royal Navy tropical uniforms

This would be the Senior Rates main ceremonial uniform. He has done well for himself as it looks like he has been in less than 4 years as there are no Good Conduct Stripes(unless he had been a naughty boy!) under the anchor on the left arm.Strange thing is that he is wearing a Petty Officers uniform but has a Leading Hands single anchor on his sleeve,a Petty Officer would have two crossed anchors.
thought he might be an Artificer at first but the branch badge on his right arm looks like a Red Cross for a Sick Berth Attendent?

Cap badge could be Royal Scots Fusiliers, but again was the kilt part of a lowland regiment?

I agree with Bearnan as i live in Rugeley and i pronounce it Rudgeley which most of my friends do but we come of the council estates, people from the wealthy areas pronounce it Rouge-eley,so can be scribed down wrong. One of my friends is a Clews(old Rugeley family) which seems a close offshoot of Cluse.

Hi Irene that’s very interesting.
What about the rank I know and can see he started as a cook and moved to a stoker but what is LSM and the other letters in rank? Any idea?
A/L/stok is probably Acting Leading Stoker, this means at his place of work they needed a rank of Leading Stoker(army equivalent is Corporal) but had no one available so they give an experienced Stoker the rank so he has the responsibility of that job but usually without the extra pay.
The last one RFR is Royal Fleet Reserve, after leaving the Navy he would be put on the reserve list for a few years and called up again in an emergency.

The Lighter Side / Re: Unpleasant Deaths

My grandfathers nephew, Gibb McAughtrie, and many other relatives of mine, were involved in the Knockshinnoch Mining Disaster in the 1950's. (New Cumnock).  Some of them did not survive, but  Gibb was the first person to be brought to the surface during the rescue mission. Several miners died, including a number of my relatives who were involved in the drawn out rescue procedure.  One of them, Andrew Houston, lead the rescue team.  Another relative got the George medal!  Both my grandparents were born in New Cumnock, so there were a lot of my relatives from both sides whose lives were lost, or they were seriously injured.

I have a video of a film that was made about the rescue "The Brave Don't Cry", sent to me by a relative, I also have a book that was written about the Disaster, "Black Avalanche"!

My granddad William Bickerton was one of the rescued men, looks like your relative got him out!Again i have many relatives killed in the Ayrshire coalfields,so much that my Grandad and my mum wouldn't let me go down the pit.
My wife's great aunt died as a young teenager after her nightie caught fire as she lent over the fire to hang up her Christmas stocking :(

The closest base to Cannock was probably RAF Hednesford ,this was a Technical training base. The main Army barracks would of been at Whittington, between Lichfield and Tamworth. It is still being used today as the main training base for all 3 services medical branches,as mentiond before there was an American presence there, but can't find anything about other units around the area.It was also the former H.Q. of the Staffordshire Regiment(the museum is located here as well).
