World War Two / Re: Able Seaman Thomas Bates
« on: Wednesday 25 October 23 21:07 BST (UK)  »
I have done some searching re Able Seaman  Thomas Bates  and found that his number was D/SSX 16011
He was a Royal Navy Seaman on board HMS Gloucester when it was sunk by German aircraft on 22nd May 1941 with the loss of 722 of the crew of 807.
Her pennant number was 62

Is there any way of finding his details from when he joined the Royal Navy? Again there is no information regarding his dare or place of birth  and I've had no luck in finding naval records.

Thank you for the replies.they all seem to be relevant.

Ivy was born 28.10.1918 in Leicester at 19 Gray Street and died 16.11.1918 at Groby road hospital following an operation to repair both her heart valves.

Her eldest child, a son was born 1940.
Her other two children were possibly sired by her half brother who was introduced to my dad in the 1940s as her boyfriend. (I know there was a family secret about what he'd done when he suddenly came back into their lives after being raised by his late father's family from birth in 1914. I don't know full details.)

I can't find another Thomas Bates who was an Able Seaman who died between the sons birth and my parents meeting.

Thank you for the newspaper details, I've been unable to locate any on the two paid sites or family search. I will look again.

On my maternal aunts death certificate it states that she was the widow of Thomas Bates, able Seaman. My aunts maiden name was Bates and I can find no trace of amarriage for her.
The only information I have for Thomas Bates is his name and profession. Is there any way to trace a deceased Seaman who would possibly have died in WW2? TIA

Thank you Sea God. I have no information at all about your granddad and I'm not sure my grandma knew anything about her sisters marriage as  she rarely kept in touch with most of her siblings due to having made a bad marriage that she didn't want to make. I will take a look through what I have and let you know.

Hi Sea God, so it looks like your grandfather was my great uncle by marriage. I don't have any real information on him yet but will be happy to share anything I come across.

Thank you for the replies. Yes, my William Prince was born in 1867 in Coventry. His parents were William and Emma.

Annie Prince née Merrick was born in Sutton Cheney. The only child of George Merrick and Elizabeth nee Botrill or Boterill.

I can find Annie from birth through to death with the exception of the 1891 census. Beatrice McLean was her married daughter.

I can't find William after their marriage in 1890.

Leah Webb, whose surname I couldn't remember, so thank you for tracing her, did give herself the title of wife and use the name Mrs Leah Prince when registering the death. She was granted probate and awarded his small estate of less than £300.
Annie Prince contested it and a note was made on the probate record that the money was then given to Annie, William's legal but estranged wife.

As I understand it, William joined the airforce in 1918 until 1929. I also know, from his son William's army record, that that at the time of William jnr's death William senior was living in Mere Road in Leicester and was given William jnr's effects and war pay.im hoping to get some idea of when he actually left Annie and moved to Kidderminster.

Leicestershire / Missing Grandparents

After a break of a few years I've finally been able to restart my family history research. I have several brick walls that are holding me up. The first one concerns my great grandparents.
William Prince born in Coventry in about 1871 married Annie Merrick (more likely Mary Ann Merrick) born in Sutton Cheney in 1869. The wedding took place on 16th March  1890 when the couple were both living at 196 Syston Street, Leicester.
After that date I can find no trace of William living with his family in the census returns although 7 children.
I also can't find Annie in 1891.
I know that William left Annie and went to live in Kidderminster Foreign where he may have bigamously married a woman who called herself Leah Bates and tried to claim his estate when he died but it eventually went to Annie

Can anyone find any trace of William that I am somehow missing or find Annie in 1891?
I'd be very grateful for any help in pinpointing their whereabouts as all my searches on Ancestry and FindMyPast are giving zero results.

Thanks. Again for the information. Could I be really cheeky and ask if this means Great uncle William was prpbably gassed in November and lived on until 14th December?
Also, is a CCS a field station hospital?

Hi, thanks for the replies.
William Prince was born in Leicester in 1893 to William Prince and Annie (nee Merrick)

Thanks for the explanation about the pay. I thought his father may have had the money but Annie got her own back on him and his bigamous or common law wifewhen he passed away.

I tried to post an image of his list of personal effects that someone sent me but it just loads as gobbledegook. I think it came from one of the two main fhsites. As im having to research from a phone im struggling to decipher anything that doesnt have thw transcribed details with it.
