Hi there - just discovered your post as I haven't gone back to this thread for a very long time!
The Prussian sea captain was Charles (Karl) Robert KANNENBERG and he married Ellen Margaret MAGILTON in Killyleagh in 1872.  After his wife died in 1912 he emigrated (I don't know exactly when) to S.Africa where 3 of his sons had already gone ( one died there in 1911 aged 21 so he never saw him again).  The Thomas Henry KANNENBERG you mention married Florence PERKS in Birmingham in 1919 and was the father of Margaret, whom I met before she died in 2010. She has a son John who I am in contact with and have met, and also 2 grandsons and now one great grandson.  I never did find out the name of the ship! I would love any further info you may have on Thomas' time with your gggrandparents.  I was unaware he had gone to S.Africa before returning to fight in WW1.  I know John would be very interested in anything you know.
Regards,
Leona

Any help/info gratefully received - especially in relation to Mackerll name, etc.

Thanks for this - I had thought of this as a last resort although some are larger than the glass of my flatbed scanner.  Will have a go and  save to CD , index and then they can scroll through by date.
Thanks again!

Yep! - tried that!  And tried matching the ship's names against those belonging to Alexander McClurg (who he sailed for) but didn't get a match.
One day I'll get the elusive bit of the jigsaw!

It's quite an unusual name and seems to be quite local to that area.  Sometimes you find McGilton.  There is a Magilton's Mill not too far away and we visited in 2001.  I suppose all the Magiltons were related at one point!  Don't think the Belfast one is related but........who knows?  I have gleaned what I can from online sites and Down lookups, Griffiths, etc.  The Down Recorder were very helpful trying to find Capt. Kannenberg's shipwreck but with no luck. I can't find what ship he was on so can't search any ship's lists.  For research at Kew you need the ship's name as not searchable by surname.  What fun - such a compulsive hobby!
Thanks again,
Leona

My great grandmother was Ellen Magilton from Killyleagh, daughter of Hugh.  She married Charles (Karl) Robert Kannenberg, a Prussian seaman who came to work for the McClurgs, sailing ships for them.  I cannot find out much about the Magiltons - they all seem to be Ellen and Hugh!  I have a few colourful stories about Capt. Kannenberg!  They later went to live in Toye and when he gave up sailing, they set up a shop there and had 9 children.
Any info. gratefully received!

I have been given an old scrapbook with pasted-in newspaper cuttings from WW2. I would like to know the best way to 'conserve' them so that they can be used by the children in my local school.  I can't un-stick them from the pages and anyway they are back to back on the pages. I thought about trying to laminate them in some way but again, problems as they are back to back.  The scrapbook pages are crumbling at the edges but the newsprint is, so far, holding on!
Any advice welcomed!
