Breaking through a brick wall in 1914
« on: Tuesday 06 December 05 13:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm hoping someone can offer some advice on how I may track down someone who changed their name in 1914.

The only information I have about the couple on my chart is the following:

George Emil Oppenheim (b: 1879 Manchester) married 1911 Manchester
Adelaide Mary Heywood (b: 1877 Manchester)

I know that George changed his name to Osborne in 1914 and that he lived in both Cheshire (in Ashley at "Honeyburn" in 1914) and Manchester (100 Portland street in 1909).

As George was a British Citizen by birth, I doubt that he was registered as an enemy alien or interned, so it seems a bit of a mystery that I cannot find a record of his death.

Many thanks in advance

Hello Kirsten
Just a though ::) I would think George would have his birth surename on his death certificate rather than his adopted one. unless it was double barreled "Osborne previously Oppenheimer"  otherwise there would never be a death certificate for George Emile Oppenheimer. If it was my query i think i would simply ask any B.M.D registration office as they would know ,i think.

Hi

Did he change his name to enlist, have you checked the Commonwealth War Graves site for a possible death

Had a quick look there is a Pte G E Osborne dies 19 May 1918 and buried at Perned British Cemetery

hiya kirsten,i noticed the gang on the GWF replied to your post,at least you can eliminate that g.e osborne,i had a look round for you as well,i cant find georges parents, siegmund+adele or his brother ernest nor his sister matilda in the 1901 census, the only one from the family that i found, was frederick, who is a solicitor in manchester, the family was living at 15 east beach, lytham, lancashire in 1881 [lodgings] i found georges future wife adelaide, she came from bradford in manchester, which is just down the road from where i live.mack
