Need help finding this family.
« on: Wednesday 22 February 06 06:40 GMT (UK) »
I am having trouble locating the following family and was wondering if any one has seen or come across this family. My biggest problem is that I have no idea where they were from or where they were living.

The family are David Dewar born abt 1800  his wife Mary Ann  Dewar born abt 1800  nee Creasey  and their daughter Mary  born abt 1824. I have not found any of this family on the IGI  and have no idea where to even start looking for the parents marriage certificate their births or deaths.

My greatgrandmother Mary Dewar abt born 1824, left England in 1842 to emigrate to  New Zealand, before she left to go to NZ she was an 18 year domestic servant working for  Patrick Cornelius who was residing at 24 Seagate, Dundee.

Does anyone have any idea on how or where in Scotland I can start looking. Thanks

If you could find a marriage for them then you would get both names of fathers - then you go back that way.

Are you using Scotlandspeople - I hear it is very good.

Hi there,

Statutory registration was no introduced in Scotland until 1855, so there are no certificates for before this date.  At this point you are into church records.  If the Dewars were Church of Scotland, then the details you are looking for would be in the Old Parish Registers.  You can search these online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk but you can't view the images.  I would check earlier posts in this section for 'Where to start in Scottish Research?" as more information will be given there, along with what to expect from the records.

Anyway, I had a look for births of a Mary Dewar to a parent named David.  There only seems to be one Mary Ann Dewar showing up, born (or batpised) on 15th December 1823 at St Cuthbert's parish, Edinburgh, but the parent's given are David Dewar and Margaret Plenderleith.  I couldn't see any children around the time frame with a mother called Mary Ann Creasey.

I also looked for marriages and did not find one for David Dewar and Mary Ann Creasey.

I hope this will help a little.

Cheers,

Thank you both for answering my query, unfortunately I have no indication of where the Dewar married so at this stasge I can't get a marriage certificate, infact the details I have for this family are so limited, I'm not sure what to try next, don't have access to scotlandpeople, ( these are the first scottish descendants) other than knowing  that the Dewar name is Scottish I don't know if they even lived there. Thanks

My own research into "my Dewars" - not linked to yours as far as I know - is that they originated in the east coast area predominently, especially Fife and the Lothians.
My own lot appeared in Haddingtonshire before some of them moved westwards into Lanarkshire.
Although I have several David Dewars none of them fit with a wife Mary Ann.

Hi Robert

I'm really starting to wonder if someone has given the wrong details for the mother,
the only information I have is what is written on my 3xgreatgrandmothers death certificate  and it does not state who the informant was, so its seem to be a bit of a struggle at the moment with this Dewar Family.

Hi Jericho

I've just looked through the BIVRI (British Isles Vital Records Index) CDs - produced by the LDS. They are supposed to contain records which arn't in the IGI. I've found lots of my Scots ancestors this way.
I haven't been able to find any of your Creasey/Dewars on it. The IGI is supposed to contain all the Scottish OPRs (Old Parish/Parocial Records/Registers), though not all are online, so if they're not on it then it's probable that they're not recorded or the info you have is a bit iffy.
Have you checked the 1841 census for Dundee (I think it may be up somewhere for free - try the www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk site and go to links).
This will give details of Mary Dewar. Is she your Mary Dewar? It's quite a common name. Have you details of the ship she emmigrated on or the port she left from. I think I'd start there and then work backwards.

Hi Gadget in the Highlands

Thanks for your reply, yes I do have the BVRI and they were the first thing I looked at, yes I'm also in the process of looking into the shipping records, to see if I can gain any more info from them, I know that the Nelson Museum does not hold her records as it is known that Mary arrived there, have already put a post on Scottish board for details of 1841, but no such luck yet. Am having lots of doubts about her mother name, but will keep an open mind. Thanks for your suggestions.

this mary ann dewar. just watch the spelling of the name because ann could be as ann or anne or annie. my mother is ann.. but i have it on three certificates as ann.. anne.. annie but it is meant to be annie after all most people at that time could not spell so they just put down what they thought was right for them as i have my gg grandmother her m.s name is bifferent three time on certificates i have for here . like her birth certificate the name is bifferent on her marriege certificate and her death certificate it is bifferent spellings three time. scotland also had donald dewar he was scotlands first minister
In May 1999 Donald Dewar became the first minister of the first Scottish Parliament in almost 300 years. Mr Dewar died at the pinnacle of his career i think the ships left from liverpool or southhamton but maybe someone will tell you better i hope you get what you are looking for
