Hi Ursula,
I'm guessing that you are in thumbnail display.
This presents the scan images as small pictures so that
you can select which ones you want to fully scan. When you have selected
the ones you want ,tick the select box at the side of the thumbnail and then scan at the
required d.p.i.   I don't know your scanner but the drop down menu is likely
to give 150,300,600 d.p.i.   Scan at 600. this will give you a print size of
up to A4.  when you scan remember where they have been saved.

        Tomkin ;D ;D ;D

Negatives need to be in some sort of holder or mount.

This should ideally be matt black (to give the scanner half a chance of finding edges etc.

Many scanners have a white "plate" which would normally hold the document or picture in place...on most modern ones this is and should be removed to allow the light to shine through the negative, as opossed to "bounce off" the positive.

The smaller the negative the higher the scan resloution needs to be set; so do not expect a 35mm neg to produce good results at 600 dpi..set it way up..as far as it will go.

Some scanners allow you to set the size of the image some do not..if they do set it at some reasonable size for your screen and for what you want the finished photo to be.

If the scanner does not allow this then you will have to resize the picture in photo editing software.

Bit techincal I know but I hope it helps.

Hi everyone,  Thanks for your help, I'll give it a try later.  I can't find the plastic holder as I've moved everything because I'm decorating.

I've printed off your messages and will give it a try.  I'll keep you posted.

Thanks

Just  a polite suggestion/request...this thread was meant for people who did not have scan/restore/print facililities..an offer of help both electronic and physical if needed.

Could I ask all who just want pictures restored/dated or what ever to use the normal links on the board...otherwise this thread will get SO confusing.

I will of course continue to accept pictures and restore them for people who do not wish to post them in public.

Regards

Harry

Hi, I have been sent copies of two very old photos which if you could improve for me I would be grateful. The one I will need to put on Immigrant site to enquire for information about uniform to trace a Grt.Grandfather of a cousin whom I am helping for Family History. Please let me know if you could do this for me. Regards Syljun
