Maddening Maylors!Everton/Liverpool 1841 census lookup please!
« on: Saturday 11 March 06 08:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello all- I don't know if you'll be able to help but I'm trying to pin down my Maylors & they've been nothing but trouble!
I'll give you the full (& somewhat confusing!) details that I have!!
1861 Living Gildarts Buildings,Gildarts Gardens, Liverpool
BERNARD E. MAYLOR- head-age 40- bricklayer
Elizabeth Maylor-wife-36
Children (in order of birth) William (1844), Edward (1846),James (1849),Elizabeth(1852),George (1858)
Bernard E. Maylors first name is actually Edward so we don't know where the Bernard came from- can't find any Bernard Maylors anywhere but it's down on the original image!!
Back to 1851-
46 Victoria Street, Everton
No Bernard E. ,No Edward bernard - we presume he was away working!
Elizabeth Maylor-head-Mar-26- stone masons wife
children- William(1844),Edward (1846), James (1849), Thomas (1850).
Also in house Sarah Ducker- sister- unmar-age 20
James Ducker- nephew- 3 months
On both census All listed as born Liverpool
We have the marriage of Edward Maylor (Bernard!!!) to Elizabeth Ducker  in March 1843 at St Pauls church.

Can anyone find the elusive, unmarried Edward/Bernard on the 1841 census, we think his father was a William, possibly born circa 1788 (can't remember where I got that little nugget from could have been family search!) but the only William christening we can find is in 1797 at St Nicholas, Liverpool on the IGI & extracted from records.
I'm probably asking the impossible- but any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you from a very confused Woodydog!!

Hi

I don't think this is going to help you very much but here goes.

The 1841 Liverpool name index has no Bernard Maylor listed.  there is only one Edward aged 26 occ bricklayer and he appears to be in lodgings as there is no other Maylor on the family group.

The piece number is 558/12 folio 36A if somebody can do a full lookup.

If it's any consolation,   the 1841 will probably be online later this year - Ancestry are already showing it as a "forthcoming attraction"

Thanks very much for looking carole, I knew that it would a long shot but maybe I can look for death of William Maylor between 1837-41 and at least we know there aren't any Bernard Maylor s in Liverpool ! Shame the age doesn't match to any great extent but heck if he and his family couldn't work out what he was called it's unlikely that anyone would know when he was born ;D!
Thanks ever so much once again- I'll hang fire for ancestry and then probably go completely bonkers!!!

I know this was posted a while ago but am now looking beyond MyHeritage site on forums to see if I get beyond. From my family tree I have William Maylor born 1778 Liverpool who died in 1841 and his wife Martha born 1778 and died 1831.
They had a son Edward Maylor born 1819 died 1888- Wife Elizabeth Ducker b,1826 1897

I was wonder if you'd been able to find William Maylor birth/christening 1778? I can't find anything and makes me think he's was born somewhere else. I've heard stories from my father that four brothers came from Wales as Maylor's are my parental line. So am keen to see if I can find where they came from beyond 240 years in Liverpool.
Slight mad but William Maylor got married to Martha in St.Nicholas Liverpool 1797. I work in office building opposite St Nicholas (called the Seaman's church) in Liverpool. Though it was rebuilt in early 1800s.
Any inform would be good to know. I've not figured out how to message you directly.

Garstonite,
The two younger children in your list are the children of Edward Maylor and Elizabeth Forrestill. That Edward is the son of Edward.

1841 census Gildart St Liverpool HO107/558/3/14
William Maylor 65 sugar baker (not of county)
Mary Maylor 40 (Scotland)
Mary Maylor 6 (Lancs)
William Maylor 10 (Scotland)
Margaret Maylor 6m (Lancs)

This would appear to be a second marriage 1833 St Nicholas (Lancs OPC) and would fit with the death of Martha 1831.

Sugar workers travelled between Scotland and Liverpool regularly, often working for the same family concerns (eg Macfie).

Added ... St Nicholas regs show Mary a widow.

Thanks Heywood - I thought as much - and I know Prince Edwin Street - it is still there - on the edge of the City Centre - must have been pretty new buildings then - couldn't see Elizabeth having kids aged around 52 - ..lol
