Marriage in Victoria - possibly Melbourne?
« on: Monday 10 April 06 20:26 BST (UK) »
Hi folks,

I'd so appreciate a lookup for a marriage record for the following couple:

John EDMONDS / EDMUNDS and Emily LITT.

I am trying to determine whether this couple ended up in NSW (where my great-grandmother, Edith Pearl EDMONDS was born in 1887)

Thanks
best wishes
Leanne

Looks like the family was in NSW from at least 1878; from NSW BDMs (www.bdm.nsw.gov.au):

7335/1878    EDMONDS, EMILY    JOHN    EMILY    ALBURY
5287/1885     EDMONDS, ELSIE M      JOHN      EMILY      CANTERBURY
5614/1887    EDMONDS, EDITH P    JOHN    EMILY    CANTERBURY

As the earlier birth was recorded in Albury, which today is right on the border between NSW and Victoria, and the later two are in Canterbury which is now a south-western suburb of Sydney, it would seem that John and Emily were travelling northwards for several years following their marriage.  Interesting!  :)

Hope that helps

Thanks for the lookups folks.

Sad to see that 3 of the children died in 1882.

If anyone has access to the 1865, Ref 32 Victoria marriage record for John & Emily i'd appreciate any detail that might be included.

best wishes
Leanne

Leanne

You can purcahse and download an uncertified image online, cost is $17.50AUD

http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/servlet/IdxSearch?action=purchaseImage

Victorian certificates are pretty informative and should give details of parents, birthplace etc.

Cheers

Aah .. Thank you Genni,

I ordered 2 certificates from NSW last year and they only had the "snail mail" option.  I didn't  know that Victoria has a digital option .. that certainly makes for instant gratification!

best wishes

One of my ancestors also had 3 children who died in Victoria in 1882.  I only have one of the certificates so far, but she died of typhoid fever.  Could possibly be same for yours.

Hello Leanne in the Netherlands.
You enquired about John Edmonds and Emma (Emily) Litt.
They were my Great Grandparents  . My Grandfather on my Mother's side.
They were married in Beechworth, Victoria, on the 2nd February, 1865.  I have a copy of their Marriage Certificate.
They did eventually live in Sydney.
I remember my Grandmother, their daughter in law, speaking of a "Perlie Edmonds"
This is my first time contacting anyone in this manner but I was glad to see your note.
All good wishes   Rosie 36
