1841/1851/1861 Brighton Census - VERNON
« on: Sunday 24 October 04 18:16 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for Information on Stephen and Elizabeth Vernon. I found a record in a church register in Alfriston, of Edward Reed Vernon born July, 29 1830. Born in Brighton. Baptized in Alfriston September 12, 1830. His parents were Stephen and Elizabeth Vernon. Edward Reed Vernon was my great-great-great grandfather. I have a picture of possibly Stephen and Elizabeth Vernon in Brighton around 1863. The Vernon's in the photos are older, i guess in their 60's or 70's. I assume that they have been living in Brighton since the 1830's.  Any information provided would be a great help since I've been stuck at this roadblock for a while now.

Stephen and Elizabeth may have had another son, William Vernon around 1840. Who appears on a census in the USA with Edward Reed Vernon. William was born in England, but it is not clear what his relationship to Edward is. Edward Reed Vernon migrated to Minnesota, USA in 1861. I beleive William Vernon Migrated to the USA in 1870.

I have a marriage certificate in 1859 that listed Edward Reed Vernon's father as Stephen Vernon, and Stephen's occupation was a Labourer. So I am certain that he was alive and present on the 1851 census, and should be there on the 1861 census if I'm right about when the picture was taken.

Thanks

Here is the Picture of the unknown Vernon Woman. The pictures were taken in Brighton circa 1863.  Possibly Elizabeth Vernon, the mother of Edward Reed Vernon, or Edward Reed Vernon's Grandmother.

Hi Daryl

I have checked the only part of the 1851 census for Brighton that I have  which is HO107/ 1647 Folio's 1 - 364

Unfortunately there is only 1 girl named Elizabeth VERNON listed in that particular section - she is 16 and a servant from Birmingham.

But there is still the central part of Brighton (which I do not have) to be checked - so hopefully they may be there.

Chris,

Thanks for the info. It's possible the Elizabeth Vernon you found may be connected in some way. I haven't been able to find very many Vernons living in Sussex at all. If I dig up anymore specific information on where in Brighton they lived I will post it to help narrow down the search. I appreciate your help in finding my ancestors.

Chris and Daryl,

I checked the index for Brighton, Regency Square, and the surname Vernon is listed. I should be able to stop at the library on the way home from work and will see what I can find tomorrow.

Hi Daryl,

Here is the Vernon readings for Regency Square, Brighton, 1851 census:

HO 107/1646    52 Norfolk Square, Folio 411

Sarah Vernon, head, widow, 55, Lodging Housekeeper, born Flayworth Notts
Ann Maria Wales, Grandchild, U, 9, Scholar, London
Sarah Jane Wales, Grandchild, U, 8, Scholar, London
Emma Long, Servant, U, 20, Domestic Servant, Pelworth

HO 107/1646   14 Silwood Place, Folio 339

Forbes Vernon, Pupil, U, 7, Scholar, Ireland
(listed above the students is Joseph Gill, Teacher of Classics)

I also checked the spelling "Verner" for you with the following results:

HO 107/1646     19 Silwood Place, Folio 341

Anna Verner, Head, Widow, 62, Annuitant, Ireland
James Verner, Son, U, 42, Annuitant, Ireland
Elizabeth Verner, Dau, U, 36, Annuitant, Ireland
Octavia Verner, Dau, U, 28, Annuitant, Jersey

I regret that your Stephen and Elizabeth Vernon were not found in Regency Square. This is the only census I have for Brighton.

John,

Thank you very much for looking that up for me. I am very appreciative of the fact that you were willing to take the time to go the library!! I have had such a difficult time obtaining this data because I live in America.  I am planning on making a trip to England in a few years, but it would be nice to go with atleast some knowledge of my ancestors. I am still stuck on the 1st person from England.

Although we didnt find Stephen and Elizabeth Vernon, we did narrow down the search a bit more.

I assume they lived in the same part of town as the "J.A. Jones" photographic studio.   According to the back of the photograph, the studio was located at "36 & 37 High St." in Brighton.
Thanks again for all the help.
