Hi Quarryman

There are 431 Robert ROBERT(S) in Merionethshire in 1871 - none apparently at Talsarnau.

How do you know this fellow existed?  You must have a rough idea of his age/ whether he is likely to be working and what occupation/ either his wife and children or his parents?

Anything else you can provide would help!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Quarryman,

Couldn't find Talsarnau in GENUKI, but according to
http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/unit_page.jsp?u_id=10306814
Quote
It was part of Festiniog RegD/PLU; Ardudwy Hundred; Deudraeth; and Deudraeth RD.

Have you tried looking in Ffestiniog ?

Talsarnau is in the Parish of Llanfihangel y Traethau (Ffestiniog ED districts nos 7 and 8 in the 1871 census.)

The census contains three Robert Roberts in Talsarnau

1> Robert Roberts, Ty Calch, a quarryman born about 1805 in Beddgelert. Husband of Ellin

2> Robert Roberts of Ty'n y Bryn, born in Ffestinog circa 1839. Husband of Jane

3> The son of #2 A scholar born about 1865 in Llanfihangel y traethau.

Thanks guys for gettingon my case.

Sorry but "Robert R. Roberts  of Talsarnau" was the only information I have - gleaned from a fragment of my grandfather's diary.

I guess it must be either #1 or#2.

I'll dig deeper; in the meantime, once again, many, many thanks

I am amazed!  :o

Freebmd (not complete) has 11 Robert Roberts ROBERTS, most born between 1842 - 47 and one in 1875, most in Llanrwst or Dolgelly, one in Liverpool.

Distinctly unimaginative naming pattern!

What date is the diary?  Does it refer to an adult?  In what context - historical directories might help.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arranroots,

The date of the diary is 1871, and as far as I can make out R. R. Roberts was the conductor/leader of the Talsarnau choir.

My grandfather (the diary writer) was studying at the Royal Academy in London (he became a noted Welsh Victorian composer of both sacred and secular music) and the choir had/was performed/performing one of his numbers.

As to the name pattern, I agree with you - my grandfather was called Robert Roberts Roberts on his birth certificate, his sister married a William Williams Williams, and another figure from his diary was called Evan Evans.

Nobody I have spoken to to can give an explanation!

Thanks for all your help.

Regards

Quarryman
