Birth - Owston Ferry - SPEED

Can anyone help?

I have been trying (for a long time !!) to find the birth record or birth certificate for John SPEED, to discover who his mother is.

From the 1861 census I have the information that he was born 1838 in Ferry, Lincs.

His father was William SPEED (taken from his marriage licence). I therefore think information regarding a William and Mary Speed on the 1841 and 1851 census probably relates to my John and family.

I have searched the 1838 site for mention of a birth but the only one I can find was at Lincoln (14/407). Would a birth at Owston Ferry be registered at Lincoln? It seems quite a distance away. If not, where would it be registered?

PS. is there a site where you can look up the name of a village and it tells you the registration district?

He was probably too early for registration (started Q3 1837)

Sarah SPEED's baptism is in the IGI; her birth is on FreeBMD but the number is illegible also

There's a submitted entry on the IGI for a William SPEED 1841; mother is named as Mary TURNER ... it may be correct, but treat with caution!

There were Mary TURNERs bap in Epworth in 1806, 1809, 1811 and 1817. (I see her birthplace was given as "Hepworth" in 1851.)

Geoff E, you mentioned the 1851 census. Could you possible take another look for me?

I have details someone found for me a while ago, when I had less information. They said the entries weren't very clear.
John's place of birth was given as Newington, Surrey. Could this be somewhere else; could 'Surrey' actually be 'Ferry'?
And I have father William's birthplace as 'Yorkshire' altho the 1841 said Lincs. Does the 1851 give any further information, such as where in Lincs the children where born?

I'll have to check out the Misson link. Got excited when  I saw Misson, thinking this was the link I needed, then realised the Misson link I have relates to  John Speed's daughter's husband's family !!!!    and there were too many changes of towns for this to be anything other than a coincidence.

I think! Something to further keep me busy.

Yes, I believe that what has been written down by the enumerator as Newington Surrey could well have been Owston Ferry on the original form (but we'll never really know, will we?).  By this time (1851), they had moved to Grimsby ... it's quite possible the enumerator there had never heard of Owston Ferry and wrote down the name of a place he had heard of.

Hi Gill,
I have copies of the baptism records for St Martin's Church at Owston Ferry for the period you are looking at. There is no baptism of a John Speed. There is however a Sarah Speed daughter of William and Mary of Kelfield. She was baptised 9th Feb 1840. Williams occupation is given as labourer. That area comes under the Isle of Axholme. If you put Isle of Axholme FHS into a search engine you will get to their site, there is a map showing all the villages covered have a look for Kelfield. The society do charge for look ups but they also sell copies of registers at very reasonable prices £2-£4 a book. Hope this helps,
