  Hi Maeve....

So our window is now 1920 -1924...

The witnesses are I take it Charles Henry b 1891
                                              Emma              b 1905

  So will go through again....

The Charles Baxter in Birkenhead age 56 died 1923 is now discounted as well have him there in 1901 right age of 34.

Greeting’s Again Folks…..

Oh My…… The plot thickens !!!!
I’ve gone back wards for Benjamin Baxter.
How many different Women are in charge of Benjamin ?...

1841. Census.
HO 107 / 604. Book 12. / Folder. 31. / Page. 5.
St. Margaret’s Parish with Bishop’s Fee.. Leicester.
Woodboy Street.= ( Birth Street for “ Geo. Merrick The Elephant Man “ )

George Warner. 15.
HARRIET. Baxter. 25. Independent Means.
Benjamin Baxter. 4.
Elizabeth Baxter. 4 Months Old.
All born within the Borough of Leicester.

1851. Census.
Via Ancestry Key Surname = BARTER.
My Disk = Baxter. As per below.

HO 107 / 2088 / 666 / Page. 3.
St. Margaret’s Parish.
Woodboy Street
No. 5. Goodards Yard.
HANNAH   Baxter   Head   W   28   F   Household Affairs   LEI   LEICESTER
Benjamin   Baxter   Son   U   14   M   Winder Boy   LEI   LEICESTER
Elizabeth   Baxter   Dau   U   10   F   Seamer   LEI   LEICESTER
William   Baxter   Son   U   6mths   M      LEI   LEICESTER
William   Baines   Lodger   U   40   M   Frame Knitter   LEI   NARBOROUGH

1861. Census.
GR 9. / 2288. / 103. / Pages. 11. ~12.
St. Margaret’s Parish
Ecclesiastical District Christchurch.
No. 12. Upper George Street.

Benjamin Baxter. Head. Mar. 24. Stocking  FWK. b Leicester.
Sarah A. Wife. 23. Charwoman. b ditto.
John Thomas. Son. 2.  b Ditto.
Benjamin. Son. 3 Months Old..

That lest Benjamin kept to a birth date of 1837 through out  Censuses.

We have 71. 91, & 1901. Returns but not 81.
just wonder if as Mother had died 1871.
The family was split up so might not even have been recorded where ever they were ?

I did try and find that Marriage (John Thomas Baxter ~ Ada Banbury 1875.)
But drew a blank ….
So….. Not St. Margaret’s Parish Church. ..Sorry.

Also trawled Death’s via Ancestry 1919. ~ 1825
But drew a blank  for our Charles Thomas
Even tried my N.B.I. 1825 ~ 2000.
But only one for Charles Thomas showed up
But aged just 10 weeks in Lincolnshire.

Just wonder if Benjamin (Snr) was also involved with the Boar War as well ?
But never came back…… Hence no burial details found in England ?

MIKE.

BTW….
Spoke to a Head Librarian of the Records Office tonight
All seems to be going well should open week beginning 22nd Oct.

Seems a little old to join the army in your early 40s or at best late 30s if Benjamin joined in the middle 70s.

Even if Benjamin's birth was missed by the civil registration as it was just too early, you have his full and half siblings' births.

Births Mar 1841
Baxter  Elizabeth     Leicester  15 87

Births Sep 1850
Baxter  William Hames     Leicester  15 114

I think the lodger in 1851 was probably William Haines not Baines (though the census image is definitely Baines) and William born 1850 was his son.

Marriages Jun 1854
Baxter  Hannah    Leicester  7a 321
Haines  William     Leicester  7a 321

plus another son

Births Mar 1853
Baxter  Joseph Thomas Haynes     Leicester  7a 184

1861 census RG9 2290 folio 37
3 Goddards Buildings Belgrave Court Leicester St Margaret  Leicestershire
William Haines 50  Hull, Yorkshire, Head Married Stocking Frame Knitter
Hannah Haines  48 Leicestershire,  Wife Married
William Haines 10  Leicestershire,  Son
Joseph T Haines  8 Leicestershire, Son

The possible and convenient death of Hannah's first husband James on the GRO index isn't when checked against the NBI

Deaths Mar 1841
BAXTER  James     Leicester  15 65

as James was aged 2 according to the NBI for St Nicholas Leicester.

So James Baxter seems to have disppeared as well (obviously a blackhole in Leicester where all male members of this family disappear into!)

Possible first marriage

JAMES BAXTER
HANNAH TEBBUT
Marriage:  25 DEC 1835   Saint Margaret, Leicester

The details of the second marriage would confirm or eliminate the first.

Despite the changes in birthplaces either this is them in 1871 or a family of dopplegangers.

1871 census RG10 3287 folio 36
60 Norfolk Street Leicester St Mary  Leicestershire
Hannah Haines  56  Coleorton, Leicestershire, Head Married Laundress
George Neal  25 Narborough, Leicestershire,  Nephew  Farm Servant
William Haines 20 Huncote, Leicestershire,  Son Groom
Thomas Haines 17 Knighton, Leicestershire,  Son  Warehouseman

George Neal appears to be on the Haines side of the family as he was lodging with other Haines in 1861.

I can't easily see Hannah on the 1881 census (no surprise there then) if she was still alive and the 1871 census is a correct entry and or she didn't remarry of course. This might be her burial - only possible I can find.

18th April 1888 Hannah Haynes aged 73 Welford Road Cemetery Leicester.

I can't see a candidate for this woman on the 1881 census.

Perhaps Mike can find an address for this burial or details of the Hannah marriages or baptisms of any of the children?

I haven't done a thorough search for the death of William Haines on the principle he might just be as difficult to find as James and Benjamin Baxter, or he could of course be in the same cemetery plot as Hannah! If she is the correct woman let's hope others are buried with her.

Regards

Valda

There is but extremely difficult to read.  Looks like:
So*r Lane (perhaps Soar Lane).  Marriage took place at The Parish Church in the Parish of All Saints Leicester.

Just received this information from relative.
Children of Benjamin Baxter and Hannah Elizabeth Smith.

Married in Leicestershire 1880.

Mary Baxter born circa 1884 - no address given
Lydia Baxter born circa 1887 - no address given
Amos Benjamin Baxter born 13 Jan 1890.  (Address given is 6 Pasture Lane Leicestershire

No need to persue children Mary and Lydia as they are well documented as to marriages and children. Hope this helps.  Maeve

Soar Lane on the 1881 census goes from RG11 3178 folio 108 page 22 to folio 110 page 25. Numbers 6 & 8 Soar Lane are missing with no explanation whereas number 1 is stated as uninhabitated.

There is also Mill Yard Soar Lane at RG11 3179 folio 64 page 23

All in the All Saints area of Leicester

Benjamin junior like his brother John Thomas is relatively easy to follow on later censuses.

1891 census RG12 2535 folio 86
6 Pasture Lane St Margaret Leicester  Leicestershire
Ben Baxter 32Leicestershire, Head Married Shoe rivetter
Annie Baxter 28 Leicestershire,  Wife Married
Mary A Baxter 8 Leicestershire, Daughter
Liddy Baxter 4 Leicestershire, Daughter
Amos Baxter 1 Leicestershire, Son

1901 census RG13 2986 folio 154
18 Cumberland Street Leicester formerly All Saints  Leicestershire
Benj Baxter  43 Leicestershire, Head Married Plasterer's labourer
Hannah Baxter  38  Leicestershire, Wife Married Wool ?bler
Lydia Baxter 17  Leicestershire, Daughter
Amos Baxter 11  Leicestershire,   Son

Births Mar 1890
Baxter  Amos Benjamin     Leicester  7a 232

Births Sep 1884
either
Baxter  Lydia     Leicester  7a 287
or
Baxter  Lydia     Leicester  7a 306

Births Sep 1882
Baxter  Mary Ann     Leicester  7a 275

This is I think the marriage of Benjamin senior's second wife. A late marriage considering the evidence of the 1891 and 1901 censuses which might indicate Mary Ann was unsure of her legal husband Benjamin's whereabouts?

Marriages Jun 1901
Baxter  Mary Ann    Leicester  7a 643
Timson  Bryan     Leicester  7a 643

Full 1891 census entry including boarders

1891 census RG12 2530 folio 106
20 Rodney Street St Margaret  Leicester Leicestershire
Thomas Corbett 78 Hinckley, Leicestershire,  Head Married F W K
Elizabeth Corbett  68 Hinckley Wife Married
John Corbett 31 Leicester,  Son Single Chimney Sweep
Mary A. Baxter 40 Hinckley, Leicestershire, Daughter Widow Cashmere winder
Bryan Timson  53 South Crotton?, Leicestershire, Boarder Widower Labourer Bricklayers
Bryan Corbett 5 Leicestershire, Son
Jane Corbett 2 Leicestershire, Daughter
Flora Corbett  2mths Leicestershire, Daughter

1901 census RG13 3005 folio 182 & 183
21 Knighton Street Leicester formerly St Mary  Leicestershire
Bryan Timson  64 Leicestershire, South Croxton Head  Widower Road Labourer Corporation
Mary A Baxter  49  Leicestershire, Hinckley Lodger Widow
Charles B Timson  20 Leicestershire, Leicester, Son Shoe rivetter
Bryan Baxter 15 Leicestershire, Leicester, Son  Shoe rivetter
Jane Baxter  12  Leicestershire, Leicester,  Daughter
Flora Baxter 9  Leicestershire, Leicester,  Daughter
Mary A Baxter  7  Leicestershire, Leicester,  Daughter

Births Mar 1886
BAXTER  Bryan     Leicester  7a 259

Births Sep 1888
BAXTER  Jane     Leicester  7a 206

Births Mar 1891
BAXTER  Florrie     Leicester  7a 267

Births Dec 1894
Baxter  Mary Ann     Leicester  7a 172

I've no idea whether these Corbett/Baxter/Timsons continued on as Baxters or chose to become Timsons after their mother's marriage. What is clear is that Mary Ann was no longer with Benjamin Baxter by at least no later than the year 1885.
