2/9th Manchester Regiment - Jack Ashton
« on: Tuesday 21 November 06 10:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for information about Jack Ashton from 2/9th Manchester Regiment who fought during the first world war with my great grandfather Vivian Dyson.

I have recently come across some pictures of my GGrandfather and his regiment and Jack Ashton was one of those pictured who had been named. I know that he had a wife called Lucy but nothing else. I haven't had a chance to have a proper look at the photos - there are group shots in England and maybe some in a prisoner camp? As well as a few individual ones

Any help would be much apreciated

Thanks

hiya laura,we are just starting to put togethor a website solely for the 9th manchesters, its a project by one of the members of our manchesters website and backed up by the other members, there are two john ashtons with the 9th manchesters, there was WO2 john ashton 351008 and private john ashton 351009,its possible that the last digit on their numbers is a typo and they are the same man,if so,then this is your gt grandfathers mate,i will search all the ashton papers for you at work tonight, will post anything i find, can we have copies of the pics for our photograthic roll of honour for the manchesters site please, your gt g/father was a WO2 so john[jack]ashton could be the first man mentioned, both would have enlisted around the same time, mack

Hi

Thanks for that, it is a great start, and very interesting to hear that you are putting together a website about the 9th Manchesters! My grandad only showed me these pictures recently so I haven't had a chance to really go through them. I am looking to get them scanned in to the computer, as well as see if there are any more names mentioned. I will update you as soon as I have anything

Thanks

laura, company serjeant major dyson wrote to lance serjeant harvey brooks parents when he was killed, they lived at 74 turner lane ashton,it might be worth a request in the tameside reporter to see if any descendants of serjeant brooks still live there,CSM dyson and jack ashtons names are in a list i have,of men who had volunteered in sept/nov 1914,along with 600 others, your gt grandfather was a CSM in oct 1917,and he would have been only 21 at the time, thats young for a CSM,i think he was in line for the regimental serjeant majors position but young john,w peagram got it,he was only 20,he enlisted at the same time as your gt grandfather, and went on to win the DCM for gallantry, mack

Wow, where have you got all of this information from? I think I had talked to you before about letters that he had written, we only have two replies from people, but sadly he must have written many. I will ask my grandfather to have a look at these posts this afternoon to see if he can add any more information?

Thank you very much

laura, one of his jobs would have been to write letters to the next of kin,i only found ref to him writing to sgt brooks folks, they may have been friends, sgt brooks enlisted on 19th may 1915 in the 9th battalion,he transferred to the 2/9th on 13-6-15,do you have an address for CSM dyson at the time of the war,hes one of the few that i have no address for, mack
