Calling Winnipeg hockey fans
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 01:03 GMT (UK) »
Would any kind people in Winnipeg with long memories, or access to books about hockey, have any knowledge of Bill Robinson?  He played in the 1941 Rangers team which won the Memorial Cup, and coached the Manitoba Bisons in the fifties and sixties, before a spell as general manager of the Jets.  There is a photo of him in the Rangers team on the web, but it is indistinct.  I want to confirm that he is my relative, whose wedding photograph is among our family snapshots.  I am unsure how he fits into the family, and the knowledge that he lived in Winnipeg would be a sound basis for my further research.  This wedding photograph is posted, along with more details, in Emigrants to Canada/Bill and Kay Robinson, as I believe either he or his parents emigrated from here in Lancashire.  There may be a better photograph of him during his hockey career, possibly in a University of Manitoba yearbook.  If someone could locate such a photo, and compare it with the wedding one, or email it to me for comparison, I would be ever so grateful.

Janice - hi again, and thanks for all the help.  The date of 1978-79 is, so far, the latest reference I have to Bill's name, and may prove significant.  The UBC paper is fascinating (apart from the prominence of cigarette advertising), and it is interesting to actually read about something Bill said and did, even in the context of a disagreement during a game.  It sort of brings him to life.  I guess the Winnipeg Free Press is my next step, although I had misgivings about that, but I feel it is worth a shot.

Annie - hello and thanks.  Yes, that's the photograph I've seen.  I suppose it could be him, but there isn't a lot of detail when it's magnified.  So far, I'm not absolutely sure that Bill the Rangers player was the same man as Bill the Bisons coach.  So, even if this is not him (and I just have a feeling he could be a bit young), our Bill could still have coached the Bisons and managed the Jets.

Karen - many thanks to you also.  It is useful to know what became of the Jets, and I will certainly contact their successor team.  They may well have archives from their Jets days.  Bill seems to have been associated with them until the late seventies.

Regards to both  :)
