Just to add my two pence worth  :)
I have used FH for a while now and just recently upgraded to version 3 to try its html facilities. It's great for beginners (like me) and for more advanced users as you can configure it to do all sorts of things that I have still not had a chance to play with. It reads/saves gedcom files as standard and so you can open a gedcom saved from any application. For instance I downloaded a gedcom from ancestry's one world tree which seemed to extend my tree and imported it into family historian to look at it then merged it with my file using the file merge/compare facility. It worked fine. It will also check a file saved in anoth application and attempt to fix any errors. Not sure how well this works though.
If you want any more info there is a family historian users group at www.fhug.org.uk it is completely independent from calico pie and gives plenty of good advice and pointers on family historian along with useful downloads and additions such as gedcom census which is a great utility for easily inputting data from a census return.
One other point about family historian is that it is much more UK centric than most of it's competitors which are more biased toward the US market. Not that there is anything wrong with that  ;)

Thanks to everyone - I have purchased FH3 and it will be wrapped and put under the tree to be opened on Christmas Day.

I appreciate everyone's comments.

I'm having great problems installing my FH software onto my new machine. I've done everything that it tells me to do (install 2 first them 3)  but it won't accept the registration key (tried various ways). I've been onto the user group FAQs but can't find a solution.

Does anyone have any ideas, please? I'm now using the 30-day trial version to view my files  :(

Wish Falkyrn was around  :'( :'( :'(

Hi Gadget

Do you get an error message of any sort is it just not accepting without reason?  I might be barking completely up the wrong tree, but would it be because it's already installed on another machine and won't let you put it on another machine.  Thinking out loud here - no I am not sure that makes sense ??? ???

Hi Kerry

It doesn't get as far as even going on line to check and the licence allows one other machine anyway. When it comes to install, it asks to insert FH2 then to complete the FH3 installation it asks for the registration key. I enter it and it just comes back as invalid before it even checks it.

Just to put a spanner in the works  ;D ;D ;D ;D
I tried Family Historian and I just couldn't 'get on with it' so after trying  one or two free downloads I tried Roots Chat trial download version and feel I've never looked back, of all the software I tried i found it the easiest to delete incorrect entries from and that sold it to me - most things can be done with a rt click on the person concerned.

I actually ran FH and Rc side by side for a time but FOR ME the 'display screen' of FH didn't give me the information i wanted.

RC has a Pedigree view and gives ones own ancestors to gt grandparents from where one can 'deviate' (no rude comments, please !!!)
