From the IGI there was an EFFIS SMITH Christened:
About 10 MAR 1816  at  Tutbury, Stafford, England
Father: William, Mother: Elizabeth
This ties in nicely with the census details

So this could be the Effis on the marriage certificate and the mother of Joseph.

But where does such a name come from in the middle of England?
The main names that I am researching into at the moment are Cadman,(originating from Bulkington, Warwickshire), Smedley, (Leicestershire and Derbyshire), Paynes (Leicestershire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire) and Udall - you will also find several other names on my web page. I look forward to E-Mails from anyone who would like to share or talk about our family history.

Good.
How annoying that she kept putting Derby on the census - will teach me not to limit my IGI searches too much in future!

Oddly enough, JillJ was asking about a similar name just a few days ago.  I will see if I can find the thread.

I have checked; William and Elizabeth had no other children in Tutbury.
Why they went there for Effis will remain a mystery?

Here's the thread:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,201236.0.html

The one Jill is chasing came from a similar area - Staffordshire in fact.

Might be worth asking her if she is chasing the same person, since Tutbury is now in Staffs?

;)

Hi,

It's very interesting to come across this name again!

My Effas/Effice/Effie/Eva (whatever her name was!) was the daughter of Isaac Deavall (born Stafford abt. 1837) & Elizabeth Swift (born Birmingham abt. 1841).  She was born in Stafford in 1869 and married Samuel Oulton of Stafford in 1898, so I don't think they can be the same person...pity!

Jill
Jowett & Broadbent in Leeds.
Perry, Hartshorn/e & Wilkes in Birmingham & Dudley. Walker and Dabill in Sheffield & Notts.
Farrar in Darlington & Leeds.
Kidd & Taylor in Hartlepool & Teesside

Many thanks for this DS.

It has most certainly been a day of discovery.
