(Andy): Am I going mad, or did the post two back just repeat that of four back? Or have I missed something?
(Jill): We are in danger of confusing two threads, but what do you know about Elizabeth Swift b1841, Birmingham? The 1871/81/91 have her as being born in Stafford, so presumably you have more info.

There is an Elizabeth Swift in Handsworth, which is now Birmingham:

HO107/980/2
James Swift, 29, carpenter, b in c
Pamela S, 32, b in c
Elizabeth S, 1, b in c

..but these may be the wrong parents.
they are still there in 1851.

I agree and I know very little about her!  I think the places of birth in the 1871 census are the wrong way round;  Isaac was definitely born in Stafford.  The 1891 & 1901 say Birmingham although the 1881 does say Stafford - these are my transcriptions:

1861 Census:  32 Browning St., Stafford (St. Mary), Staffs.    RG9/1907/110/34
Isaac Deavell/Head/Mar/24/Cordwainer/Stafford, Staffs.
Elizabeth Deavell/Wife/Mar/19/Shoe Binder/Birmingham, Warks.
Elizabeth Deavell/Dau/11 months/Stafford, Staffs.

1871 Census:  36 Friar St., Stafford (St. Mary), Staffs.   RG10/2818/7/8
Isaac Deavall/Head/Mar/33/Rivetter/Birmingham, Warks.
Elizabeth Deavall/Wife/Mar/29/Boot Binder/Stafford, Staffs.
Matilda Deavall/Dau/7/Scholar/Stafford, Staffs.
Ann Deavall/Dau/5/Stafford, Staffs.
Eva Deavall/Dau/1/Stafford, Staffs.

1881 Census:  44 Co-operative St., Stafford (St. Mary), Staffs.  RG11/2690/49/18
Isaac Deavall/Head/Mar/44/Shoe Maker/Stafford.
Elizabeth Deavall/Wife/Mar/40/Boot Binder/Stafford.
Matilda Deavall/Dau/Un/17/Boot Binder/Stafford.
Lucy A. Deavall/Dau/Un/15/Boot Binder/Stafford.
Effie Deavall/Dau/11/Scholar/Stafford.
William Deavall/Son/9/Scholar/Stafford.
John Deavall/Son/4/Stafford.

1891 Census:  6 County Rd., Stafford, Staffs.   RG12/2139/106/10
Elizabeth Deavall/Head/Wid/57/Boot Binder/Birmingham, Warks.
Lucy A. Deavall/Dau/S/28/Boot Binder/Stafford, Staffs.
Effice Deavall/Dau/S/24/Boot Binder/Stafford, Staffs.
William Deavall/Son/S/18/Boot? Fitter/Stafford, Staffs.
John Deavall/Son/14/Putter-up/Stafford, Staffs.
Mary White/Nurse Child/6/Scholar/Stafford, Staffs.

1901 Census:  No. 1 Crokked Bridge Rd.,Stafford,Staffs.                         RG13/2572/39/19
Elizabeth Deavall/Head/Wid/59/Needle Fitter in Shoe Trade/Worker/At Home/Birmingham, Warks.
Ellen Price/Visitor/M/66/Seamstress - Shirt/Worker/At Home/Kinlet, Salop.
Samuel Thompson/Boarder/Wid/64/Carpenter & Joiner/Own Account/At Home/Stafford.
Samuel Thompson/Boarder/S/33/Rly. Telegraph Labourer/Worker/Everton, Lancs.

My own interest is with the Deavall family and I am not even sure if this branch is going to connect up to mine yet, so I shall continue to watch this thread with interest but will not add to it any further - unless somebody solves the mystery of the name Eff***!

I'm not convinced about the age that Elizabeth gives on censuses.
She married Isaac in Oct/Nov/Dec 1858 (Stafford 6b 27) when she would have been 16 - 17.
The Handsworth Elizabeth is looking more likely on dates although, until someone wants to buy the marriage certificate, this one is on hold I think.

To go back to the start of this topic.

Although Joseph Smith born on 10th March 1838 is illigitimate I have discovered from the birth certificate that the registrar made a footnote "The reputed father was named Pratt"

I have been unable to find Effes Smith in the 1841 census. Could she be with the father  of Joseph "named Pratt"?

Joseph was with his grandparents which started this trail.

If anyone can discover Effes in the 1841 census it would be really appreciated.

Also could there be more information on the father in the Parish records of Nailstone.
The main names that I am researching into at the moment are Cadman,(originating from Bulkington, Warwickshire), Smedley, (Leicestershire and Derbyshire), Paynes (Leicestershire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire) and Udall - you will also find several other names on my web page. I look forward to E-Mails from anyone who would like to share or talk about our family history.
