what is her name?
« on: Wednesday 13 December 06 10:04 GMT (UK) »
My second great grand father Joseph Smith got married in Nailstone in 1861. As he had been bought up by his grandparents I expected to find out his fathers name from the marriage certificate.
However, his mother's name is given and the surname is not Smith meaning that she had probably married since his birth. I have been unable to decipher the signature and this is where I hope some may be able to help me:

Is it Ester Merton or Beston or something else.

If any one can help it would be appreciated.
The main names that I am researching into at the moment are Cadman,(originating from Bulkington, Warwickshire), Smedley, (Leicestershire and Derbyshire), Paynes (Leicestershire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire) and Udall - you will also find several other names on my web page. I look forward to E-Mails from anyone who would like to share or talk about our family history.

Many thanks for your reply - possibly not Neston as the "N" in Nailstone on the certificate is very different.

Any more ideas out there?

BESTON ?

First name I thought might be Effie, but that's more a Scottish diminutive of Euphemia (at least I think it's confined mostly to Scotland  ??? )
