Brophy family emigrated to South Africa
« on: Saturday 16 December 06 05:50 GMT (UK) »
I have been reading through the Irish Boards for almost 2 days now :o and I think it's going to be a long hard slog trying to check up on my grand-parents and their family roots in Ireland (maybe the Welsh side might throw some light on this subject).

He was born James BROPHY (in Ireland) and was married to Anna Maria EDWARDS (born in Wales).   I have no dates of birth for either one of them except that I have an idea that both of them may have been born sometime between 1880 and 1890.  I also don't know if he was married before he emigrated to South Africa.  My grand-parents had about 13 children and I don't know if the older ones were born in Ireland or Wales, either.  My mother was the last child and she was born in South Africa along with a few of the other siblings.

I have a photograph of my grand-father with the photographer's address on the back, which shows it was taken in Penzance ???.  So I have no idea where to start looking for my (maternal) grand-parents' history. :(

This information might come in handy for anyone else researching this family line somewhere down the track so I don't feel that it is a complete waste of time.  Never know who might find what eh !!

I think I will start checking passenger lists and see what gems I can find.

I will wait for any news ........................... but I'm not holding my breath - hahaha. :)

Regards
CP

Bob,

Thanks for your reply and PM's.

I have no idea when James emigrated to South Africa, that's one reason I want to check the passenger lists and I think I will have a good chance of finding out.

I cannot remember all of my grand-parents' children's names but these names I remember .........I know that the eldest was James, Edward, Harry, Patrick, Gwendoline, Frances (female), Iris, Thomas, Aubrey and can't quite think of the others.  They were all born prior to 1922 because my Mum was the last child and she was born in 1922.  All of them are now deceased.

There are heaps of BROPHY's in South Africa and many of them are related.  I am going to try to locate as many cousins as I can - when I have the time, in the New Year.

Thanks for your help Rob, you are always sooooooooo helpful. ;)

Hugs
CP

CP, there are 2 free websites which have South African records you can peruse. Familysearch & eGGSA. org. eGGSA would have the most records for passenger lists, births, deaths, marriages etc including Penzance. Many Brophy family members back to 1830. Well worth a look see. Check out too Wikitree as they have Brophy family trees. Kim
