Duffy-Mary
« on: Friday 19 November 04 05:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for info in Mary Duffy beleived to be Mary Olive Duffy. This is what I know. She was born circa 1831 in or around Co. Armargh (parents unknown). She was found guilty of Burgulary 8 Mar 1849 and sentenced to 7 years and housed on the Prison Hulk Anson until she was transported to Van Diemen's Land on the Australasia as a convict. There she went on to marry Henry Clark and became my GGGrandmother.

What I am after is any info connecting to her including DOB and parents.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
thank you

Lance Swan

Armagh Ancestry hold records on the following which fit your timescale:

DUFFY    MARY    1828
DUFFY    MARY    1828
DUFFY    MARY    1832
DUFFY    MARY    1833
DUFFY    MARY    1833
DUFFY    MARY    1834
DUFFY    MARY    1834
DUFFY    MARY    1835
DUFFY    MARY    1835
DUFFY    MARY    1835

Might be worth emailing them an enquiry but best check their costs first:

Hi, Mary Olive Duffy is my 3rd Great Grandmother. She married Henry Clark in 1852 in Tasmania.
Mary was transported to VDL as a convict on the Australasia 1849 as an 18 year old.
Her native place was given as Co Armagh. She was sister to Bernard, Thomas, Margaret and Catherine Duffy.
I have been search for some time for her birth ( possibly 1831) to find her parents, with no luck.
I have searched Ancestry only to find most researchers say her parents are Bernard Duffy born 1771 in Antrim and Margaret O'Neil born 1773. This would have made Margaret 60 when she had Mary.
But Mary Olive is rarely included in the family list on a lot of these family trees.
I  also noted another father could be Thomas Duffy born 1801 and mother Catherine FOX born 1806. But this doesn't appear to be as popular but in each case Mary Olive in mentioned.
I'm hopefully someone may be able to help me, as I have no idea how to proceed.
Many thanks Susie Q

When if the first instance she was called Mary Olive? (I find the middle name 'Olive' a bit suspicious for someone born c1831 in Ireland).
Was she Catholic? if so, have you searched for baptisms for her (and siblings)? and searched for children of the couples you mentioned in order to eliminate them as her parents?
Have you tried tracing the siblings for clues?

If the Duffys were Catholic then many R.C. parish registers are online (free) although not all will go back far enough- https://registers.nli.ie/ (under an individual parish you can click on 'Irish Ancestors' to see if earlier records for that parish are available elsewhere.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Mary was Catholic.  Her indent is here, two pages, images 18 and 19.
