Looking for the marriage of a James Harmison to a Matilda Dryden about 1848.They had a son about 1849 born in shankhall and in the 1851 census they were living in the same place.  James was born about 1828 and matilda about 1829 in Berrington Law /Ellingham. We can not find them in any census after 1851. We would  be very grateful if any one could help.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.

Not found a marriage yet but in order to help anybody else trying to assist, this is the 1851 census information

Shank Hall, Tughall, Northumberland

Matilda Wife M 22 Northumberland Ellingham Brackdam
James Son 1 Northumberland Shank Hall

Anybody with local knowledge might be able to decipher the birthplaces better.

family search has a Margaret Harmeson born 1852 Bamburgh to a james and Matilda.

1871 shows a Margaret Harmison born 1851 Shankhill, North Sunderland as a servant in Bedlington.
RG10; Piece: 5165; Folio: 89; Page: 10

There seem to be a couple of census entries for a James Harmison born c 1850 around Bedlington. He has daughters Matilda and Margaret amongst others.

I think there is a lot of family in Berrington Law in 1841 with the names written as Heomilton/Harberson/Herberson

Do you have access to these records or would you like them?

the 1881 entry for James who has a daughter Matilda, also has a son WIlliam who was born in Scotland abt 1873. I wonder if the family were there.
I also had wondered if the original James and Matilda had emigrated and that these we are finding are part of the extended family.

Hello again,

1841 HO107/829/11

White House Eglingham (Lots of families are dittoed for this so it is perhaps the name of the 'big house')

Andrew Harmison  38 yrs ag labourer
Jane 33 yrs
James 14 yrs
Cherry 12 yrs
William 10 yrs
John 7 months

This may be your James because of age but the place is different. There are Eglingham and Ellingham and as phrishy found there are variations. Berrington Law was in Durham in 1841 and I am having trouble finding Matilda and wonder if her name has been mistranscribed (there are Drydens in Northumberland but no Matilda).

best wishes
heywood

Last evening I also looked at the full index for marriages using Matilda Dryden as a reference rather than James because of spelling issues but could not spot one. You can check these yourself for free, scully  at Ancestry.co.uk.

Just spotted this thread which briefly mentions your people- it may well be you from an earlier life!
