Hi - I chanced upon this page today and saw the following posted by Jane:

"Had a good look through the Capel records and found the following.  By the way, all the Bax entries from Dorking were Ag labs.
11/7/1802, William son to William Bax (born at the George Inn in Bear Green)
I'm not sure where he fits in as Bear Green is in Sussex & the dates are all wrong for the following couple."

This William is my direct ancestor and I have tracked him.... Bear Green is very close to Capel, Surrey, although across the county border in Sussex and there is still a pub there called the Bax castle. It appears that these Baxes were escapees from the strong Quaker Bax family in Capel (See the book on them by Thistlethwaite).

Not sure how this links with Kathryn's original query, but if I can help via my family tree, let me know!

There is a BAX family album which includes information going back to the 16th Century.  My mother has one copy - believe there 3 in existence (lives in France so difficult to get hold of quickly), but growing up was great interest finding out my mother's family history (to eventually coming down to my mother's name - Mary Haines Moline).  Majority of the Bax's / Pritchards etc lived in Surrey - but a few moved further.

John Bax b1510 at Oakley Surrey is one of my 10th G grandfathers
I believe the Bax family were Quakers, converted to Quaker belief when George Fox visited Surrey
Does anyone know which Quaker meeting they would have attended. The closest would have been at Dorrking

Yes, I am still here. I pop in from time to time.

The Bax family were indeed Quakers and very wealthy landowners in their day. They owned Ockley Manor, Pleystowe Farm and many others in the area of Ockley, Capel and Dorking.

It is my understanding that the early Baxes met in their homes in Capel for their Quaker meetings. You may like to follow this up here: http://www.capelvillage.co.uk/about-capel-vilag

In addition, the best book on the Bax family, that gives the family tree for about 11 lines, is the book by Bernard Thistlethwaite. I have seen a copy in the archives, and it is excellent. You can find a copy in London at the Society of Genealogists. This should be your starting point. Can't recommend it more highly. You will also be able to view some old wills here for the Bax family.
