Help with mystery pic please
« on: Wednesday 11 April 07 21:08 BST (UK) »
Wartime. A train station. A handsome young man with a package under his arm, on his way to a faraway destination... All the elements of a dark mystery :D

The sign says Telegrams. If this were England, shouldn't it say Telegrammes? The man in uniform behind, could it be a Canadian uniform, or British?

The photo seems to be an enlarged copy. The paper is new and white and the upper left corner shows an original corner. My mother evidently thought enough of this young man to have a copy made, but I don't know who it is.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
China

Hi china!

I think you are right with your instinct but for a different reason, I don't think cables was a UK thing at all  ???

Wendi  :)

PS you didn't post this on the Armed Forces board to ID the uniform in the background...was that a conscious decision?

Wendi  :)

I think it just says All my Love, on the dog. I scanned it at 1200 and had a good look but I don't think there's a name.

I can trot it over to the military board, see what the gurus say :D

cheers,

OK well I think Air Force, Canadian by instinct, but wouldn't the signs be anglo?

Although the figure at the back is wearing a Royal Air Force great coat which was issued to all that served in that arm of the forces the lack of a gas mask case for him and the lad in front make me feel that this was taken in Canada and not in the UK.

"Telegrams" is the British spelling.

However the writing is either American and possibly Canadian. My American DIL has similar handwriting.

There were many Canuks who came to England to join RAF well before the Canadian air forces arrived
