Help needed reading occupation on 1891 census
« on: Sunday 03 June 07 21:46 BST (UK) »
Can anyone decipher Herbert Collis' occupation on RG12; Piece: 250; Folio 122; Page 7; GSU roll: 6095360?

It says Labourer but I can't work out what's in parentheses.  Looks like Gymmaster  ??? ???

On the 1901 census, Herbert's a carpenter, in case that's any clue as to what it might say.

Thanks very much.

Yes, that's what I thought it said.

Can't imagine what one of those is though!

Thanks Kath - I tried that and couldn't see anything.  It suggested I might have meant to type labourer gemmaster, but such is the wonder of google, that returned no hits at all!

If you enlarge the image it does seem to read Gymnastic, still don't know how that could apply to a labourer.

The clerks coding the occupations have written EX (in pencil presumably - it's very faint) above "(Gymmaster)", but I can't work out what that might stand for either.

I suppose it could be for exercise????

Can't work out what a labourer has to do with gymnastics though!
