William Metcalfe of Askrigg
« on: Tuesday 03 July 07 21:19 BST (UK) »

Hi

I have a William Mte bpt 18/01/1824 Askrigg, s.o. Ann Mte spinster, Bainbridge.  I also have William c1826 (who married Mary Ann/e Simpson)  s.o.George Caygill Mte bpt 04/01/1781 Askrigg & Isabella nee Blades

What I'm trying to work out is whether Ann kept her son and brought him up, or whether he was adopted by George & Isabella. They had other children whose baptisms are all listed in the parish records, but William's isn't. The only baptism for a William tht comes close, is the one for Ann's son.

Does anyone have any idea how I can go about confirming or disproving my suspicions?

I live in hope :)

Anita:

I have George Caygill Metcalfe bap Jan 4th 1781 at Askrigg in my tree.
He was son of George Metcalfe 1743-1783 and Dorothy Caygill 1744-1838.
They were married at Askrigg June 14th 1770.

He married, Sept 1st 1825 at Askrigg,
Isabella Blades bap Oct 29th 1795 at Bainbridge.
She was dau of John Blades c1763-1854 and Ellen Wetherald c1764-1851.
They were married at Aysgarth June 27th 1784.

I have George Caygill Metcalfe and Isabella as having 5 children:
William b c1827 Bainbridge
George bap April 25th 1828, died May 13th 1828 at Bainbridge
Jane b c1830 Bainbridge
John b c1831 Bainbridge
George bap Feb 9th 1832 at Bainbridge.

Only 2 of those 5 children do I see in the Aysgarth PR's, the 2 Georges.
The rest come from various census returns.

There was , as you say, another William Metcalfe bap at Askrigg Jan 18 1824, son of Ann Metcalfe.
I had never made the link that the 2 Williams could  in fact be the same person.

What brought the link to mind?

Here is a earlier thread relating to the Metcalfes and the Blades. May be useful for you to make contact with Pauline who is also researching these names in the Askrigg area.
