Swansea (Morriston) Crematorium
« on: Sunday 08 July 07 18:43 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know when the crematorium opened? Im just curious as I was there today and it looked immaculate. The grounds people do a really good job of such a huge area.

Hi,

Welsh Jen posted this on Rootschat a while ago;

Morriston Cemetery (municipal) Opened for burials 1915 Area - approx. 38 acres, Grave spaces - 24,500.

Cwmgelly (Cwmgelli) Cemetery Treboeth Swansea (not too far from Landore) Opened for burials 1896  Area - approx. 8 acres Grave spaces - 5,317 All interments are made in existing family owned graves only now (no new plots available)
& Danygraig Cemetery Opened for burials 1856
Area - approx. 20 acres  Grave spaces - 16344
All interments are made in existing family owned graves only (as above). Danygraig is usually where workhouse burials can be located (& unmarked).

The council website says that the crematorium opened 51 years ago.

Morriston, Cwmgelli and Danygraig are all extremely well cared for - it's a pleasure to walk around them (if that's not too strange a comment, considering!)

Not really a bad comment!  ;D

I went around St. Teilo's of Llangyfelach today, and a lot of the stones were buried under mountains of brambles and overgrown weeds. Some were completely hidden, and the only way I knew that they were there was when I put my hand into the overgrowth and felt sandstone!

They had a really nice well kept area and a nasty dangerous area which I would not recommend going into without informing your next of kin....

You should try Mynyddbach Congregational Chapelyard - or rather you shouldn't if you want to get out of there in one piece!

I was there on Saturday and the old section is so overgrown that it's dangerous as you don't know where you are putting your feet and you can't see the gravestones. I had thick jeans on but my legs are ripped to bits! I couldn't find the graves I was looking for and I'm going to have to wait for winter when everything dies back.

Another bad one is Bethel chapelyard in Llangyfelach - brambles and goodness knows what.

How many churchyards do you know of in Llangyfelach. Theres one opposite St. Teilos churchyard. Looks like a plain chapel, but looks like someone has bought it or something, as I had to walk around someones house to get into the rear churchyard.

Maybe I need permission?

Do you mean Bethel chapel, just off the roundabout? It's accessible from Heol Fach as well - a little lane takes you into the churchyard - it's open to all, you don't need permission.

Ive had a little look at it using Google Earth. It looks like a job for Steve Irwin if he were still alive  :)

I've been to one today which is even worse!

Calfaria chapel, Fforestfach is now a nursery, but the graveyard is completely covered with Japanese knotweed (Sally rhubarb) - I don't have a hope of finding the graves I need until winter when everything has died back. You can see a few of the tops of graves if you look down from the road, but that's about it.

It's such a shame to see these places so badly neglected - I'm with you about sending in people who are on community service.

I used to live on Carmarthen Road! Is it the one by the Little Cherubs nursery for kids? or is it the one further down by tesco?
