Good questions, osprey.  Though William Edmund VENABLES & Catherine THOMAS did, I think, marry in Swansea - Dec qtr 1878, Swansea Vol 11a, Page 832, both names on the same page.

Kassie, perhaps you could post the complete details from the marriage certificate?

The birth cert of Catherine Howell THOMAS could really be helpful - especially if she was born in Port Talbot, if her father is Thomas THOMAS and her mother is Margaret!  And what a bonus if Dad is Thomas and is a mariner of some sort.

Hi Arranroots, I'm not 'knocking' osprey's wonderful finds in any way ;)  I was just trying to sort out - for my own benefit as much as anything else - what we really know for sure :)  And there are several possible lines of research remaining (birth cert, inquest, newspaper) which might prove things once and for all  8)

Cheers,

JAP

Hi JAP

No, I know you weren't - it is always good to "test" the data.

Just thought I would add my two-pennorth cos sometimes there are more possibilities than other times.

Sorry, folks, somewhere along the way I got it in my head that Catherine's marriage was registered in Neath, but it was her birth.  :-[
Still like to know where exactly though.

osprey, This whole thread is quite convoluted!  You don't need to apologise - just think of my stuff-up when I said there were no Cath* H* THOMAS births  :-[

It would be great to hear
a) exactly where Catharine Howell THOMAS was born and the names etc of her parents,
and
b) exactly where Catherine THOMAS & William VENABLES were married!
One has to wonder whether those marriage witnesses were connected in any way or just happened to be people who were standard witnesses at the location where they were married ...

And IF ONLY the inquest report could be found and if only there were newspaper reports!

Kassie, Do please post the marriage cert info.

It would be interesting to get more info on the possible Thomas THOMAS e.g. his Mate's certificate - but that wouldn't clear up or confirm any connexions.

Arranroots, Please keep offering suggestions  ;D

I have a 'feeling' that this puzzle has a solution which will be found  :D
No, I'm not 'fey' in any way - it's probably just wishful thinking  ::)  :(

Hi all,

Thanks for all the messages, I have been busy and have not had time to respond.  I will be back later today and will post the information on Catherine and Williams marriage cert.

One thing I did not notice before (old age I guess) was that they were married in a Registry Office on Swansea.

be back later,

Kassie

Hi Kassie,

Looking forward to the info on the marriage cert.

And to the arrival of the birth cert for Catherine Howell THOMAS.

And hoping that someone manages to turn up a Catherine THOMAS, age ca 1, born Port Talbot in the 1851 census.

Cheers,

JAP

Register office - interesting for that time if it was a first marriage. Not married by banns then. Was it by superintendent registrar's certificate?

I know where the register office is now, and I know where it was previously but I had to go searching for where it was at that time and I found this post from another Rootschatter but on a different resource

Nelson Terrace seems to be off Nelson Street, so very handy for Park Street.

Hi Osprey,

No banns.  I am sure this is a stupid question but how do I tell if it is a Superintendent registrar cert?
