Catherine and William Venables
« on: Thursday 04 October 07 22:37 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am back again searching for information on Catherine Thomas who married William Edmund Venables. She was born in Port Talbot in 1852 and lived in Cardiff until her death in 1910.  I have her marriage and death certificates.  On her the death cert. it has her name as Catherine Howell Venables, but it has her name as Catherine Venables on marriage cert.
I am trying to find out her birth but with so many Thomases it is really difficult.  On the marriage cert. it states  marriage was 1879 and the residence was Park Place Swansea.  Her fathers name was Thomas Thomas and he was a Harbour Master.

There was an inquest into Catherine's death according to the death cert. I have.  Is there anyone that could tell me how to get information on the inquest.

And I am still trying to find out what happened to William Edmund Venables after 1901 census as I can not find his death.  He is mentioned on Catherine's death certificate so I am assuming that he was still alive in 1910.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for you time.

cheers

Kassie

Kassie has kindly posted a link to this new thread on a previous thread about these people.

In case anyone wishes to look at the earlier thread, it is at:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,237595

Kassie, I wonder whether it would be useful posting the precise date of the death of Catherine Howell (THOMAS) VENABLES and the date of the inquest?  Just in case anyone might have access to newspapers of that time ...

Regards,

JAP

The findings of inquests rarely seem to be around - they've either been destroyed or are covered by a closure rule. What you should be able to find is a report of the inquest in the local newspaper, probably the Western Mail would be your best bet.
I think the Record Office might have old ones

You say that you have Catherine's marriage certificate. What details does it give for her father? Would give a better chance of finding her on an earlier census with extra info. Or have you already found her?
I know the joys of searching for Thomases in Glamorgan - the more info the better.

Hi osprey,

Kassie wrote above that Catherine's father Thomas THOMAS was a Harbour Master:

... Catherine Thomas ... was born in Port Talbot in 1852.  I have her marriage and death certificates.  On her the death cert. it has her name as Catherine Howell Venables, but it has her name as Catherine Venables on marriage cert.  ...  On the marriage cert. it states  marriage was 1879 and the residence was Park Place Swansea.  Her fathers name was Thomas Thomas and he was a Harbour Master.  ...

Well, I have a suggestion for Catherine's family which works for place of birth, and age given her date of birth varies from 1848 - 1852 on later census entries, but makes it look like she might have exaggerated her father's occupation just a little.

1851 Port Talbot HO107/2462 folio 234 pg 67
Thomas Thomas head mar 25 porter b. Margam
Margaret wife 25 b. Margam
David son 4 b. Aberavon
Catherine dau 1 b. Aberavon

1861 4 Wharf Row, Aberavon RG9/4081 folio 52 pg 2
Thomas Thomas head mar 36 wharf porter b. Margam
Margaret wife 36 b. Margam
David son 14
Catherine dau 11
Sarah dau 8
Ann dau 5
Margaret dau 3
John son 7 months
all children born Aberavon

1871 Port Talbot Houses RG10/5424 folio 108 pgs 18-19
Thomas Thomas head mar 45 porter b. Margam
Margaret wife 45 b. Margam
David son 24 tinplate washman
Catherine dau 21
Sarah dau 19
Anne dau 16
Margaret dau 13
John son 10
Mary dau 7
William son 5
all children born Aberavon

1881 Port Talbot RG11/5335 folio 92 pg 59
Thomas Thomas head mar 56 stevedore dock service b. Margam
Margaret wife 54 b. Margam
Margaret dau 32
David son 25 tinplate worker
Sarah dau 16
Robert son 12 scholar
children born Aberavon
ages look a bit astray in this one

I've had a look at some online directories for 1865 and 1878, and there is no harbour master showing up called Thomas Thomas in Aberavon or Swansea. They tend to have captain before their name and sometimes letters after it.  http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Margam/PortTalbot/

Hi Osprey,

Thank you for the the information you have sent.  I am not sure how to prove if this is the right family or not. but I am off to the library this morning to do some research and  maybe I can find one of the siblings on a later census.  If you have any words of wisdom for me I would be grateful.

cheers
Kassie
