Hi Karen

Yes my John Sabiston married Margaret Folster. That was well after he arrived at Red River, Manitoba. I have all that information, I am trying now to find out how he got to Canada.

They may not have the ship or passenger list available which is unfortunate.

As far as I know, none of my Thomson's ever came to Canada. They were all in Glasgow, Scotland. (Mind you, I have only gotten back as far as the mid 1800's for them.) I am only a first generation Canadian, so most of my family is still in Britain. Both of my parents had some relatives that immigrated earlier.

As far as the spelling goes, it is the same in my line. Every so often someone slips a "P" in there.   ;)

Have you tried the archives of the Hudson's Bay Company? They are in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and are quite extensive.

Hi Janice
Yes they like to throw a wrench in there every so often because they knew we would be looking for them later and didn't want to make it easy. ::)

Hi China
Yes Ernest had many animal stories and adventures not to mention his art work but I guess he dropped the name "Evan" many years back like he changed his last name back and forth between Seton and Thompson. ::)

Hi loo
I have been to the Hudson's Bay Company Archives in Manitoba and spent many hours there. Unfortunatley I only had a limited time before I headed back to BC, and between all the other researching I didn't have time for everything. I have relatives from North to South - East to West in Manitoba which I got most of my family information but John had to get there somehow.
He wasn't a strong enough swimmer, no commercial aircraft, so he came by some kind of ship, owned by the Hudson's Bay Company and departed at "York Factory" on the banks of the Hudsons Bay, which is now Ontario.
From there he took a York Boat to the Red River Settlement on the Red River in Manitoba which is now Winnipeg.

I appreciate the help from all of you :)

There was already a John Sabiston, from Orkney, working for the HBC in BC 1853-1858. I'm sure you knew about him...same family?

Here is a link for Manitoba Culture, Heritage and Tourism. They have information on passenger lists as well as other information regarding York Factory.

A book found on "Google Books" says that the ship usually arrived in August.
