Mysterious GGgrandmother Barnaby Pendleton/Ireland
« on: Saturday 20 October 07 22:44 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help solve one of our family mysteries!?!

Much of the research on this branch of our family was already done for me, and I thought I was just going to fill in a space.

My gggrandparents Nathan Diggle and Catherine Barnaby were married at Manchester Cathedral on February 22nd 1852.  Nathan (23), was a dyer address 9 Barrow Street,  Salford, father Thomas Diggle Dyer, and I know probably much of what there is to know about him and also their family.

Catherine, (also 23), of Park Street Salford, daughter of William Barnaby, labourer was born in Ireland.  Neither said they had been married before.  Witnesses Robert Skelton and Sarah Skelton  were born in Cumbria and I know about them.  Only Robert could write.

I thought I would be able to at least find Catharine before they married or find the family nearby on a census, but no such luck!

I thought Ireland might be difficult, but this is only a short time after a census, so I was hopeful they would be close by.

I'm beginning to wonder though if the Barnaby's were English.  I've not found them, but every Barnaby i have found in England or Ireland, has been born in England.

Does anyone know this family or have any ideas?  I've tried the GRO fiche and census on line, but of course I'm dependent on their indexing, and this area in 1851is in a bad way.  I have the family on other censuses, mostly not far away, but not the Barnaby's.

Any contributions gratefully received!!

Best wishes to all

Hi Emms,

Catherine and her family are not living in Park St at the time of the 1851 census.

Looked on all the Salford 1851 Unfilmed, no luck. I will check all the Manchester 1851 just in case.

Does it say what number Park St ?

Get back to you
Regards, Dave

Dave Thank you very much for that quick reply!

No, there isn't a house number, though Nathan did have one.

Could I ask you something else then, please?  How do you get results for these unfilmed parts?  I don't often get to Lancashire, thouigh I have had the odd trip, but even then, there was no access to unfilmed parts.

Thank you again.

It's much appreciated.

Best wishes.

Emms.

Hi Emms,

Still no luck with Catherine in Manchester 1851.

The 1851 Manchester & Salford census were damaged by water while in storage. The Manchester & Lancashire FHS have used all sorts of technical thingies to enable the damaged parts to be read.

The Unfilmed census returns have been put onto a series of cd's by the M&L FHS and are available from their shop. I believe they are also on a pay per view basis online.

If you need another Unfilmed lookup ( hopefully with better results) just let me know

Hope this helps

Good Luck
Dave

Thank You very much Dave, and thank you for the explanation!  I knew about the damage, but not how far they'd got with deciphering them.

Thank you for the kind offer too.  Most of my Mum's family were in this area, but mostly they aavoided this little bit of the census.  And also my Auntie did sterling work before I got to them.

By the way, does this mean they definately weren't there, or are there some parts they are still trying to read?

Thanks again and best wishes.

Hi Emms,

All I can say is that Catherine and family do not appear on the 1851 Unfilmed census returns.

They may be on the missing parts of the census
They may not be in Manchester / Salford
They may not have bothered with the census returns. Could they read or write ?
etc etc etc

I will keep looking
Regards, Dave
