Newburn marriage
« on: Sunday 28 October 07 17:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

Only using the Internet I have managed to trace my family back to the marriage of Joseph Harrison and Susannah Robson in Newburn on the 1st June 1740

My question simply is would you have information on Joseph and Susannah, I would have expected them to have been born in Newburn or perhaps Heddon around 1720.

Or is information just not available, any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks for reading this.

You say you have traced back to 1740 via the net. Have you proved your research by BM&D certificates to 1837 and then transcriptions of CM&B registers to 1740?

A bit concerned about this. What sources did you use?

I've just checked the Newburn marriages (1659-1799) available here:

http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/Transcriptions/NBL/NBN1659.html

and it records Joseph Harrison marrying an Isabel Burne on 1st June 1740  :-\

I'd be inclined to pop down to the nearest LDS Family History Centre and order the film of Newburn Parish records for that period.

I see that the marriage that you have found (using Joseph as a search) is an IGI patron submission. These have to be checked against parish records.

The extracted records(using Susannah) have her marrying a Joseph Hanison on that date but also another to  Ralph Langlands in Bywell, 30 April 1737

I think the Newcastle University transcriptions on the link that I gave might be more reliable but you still need to check.

I've just noticed that  a William Histon also married an Isabel Burne on the same day  :-\
This is all very confusing (possibly typos) which suggests that it is necessary to check the OPR records  ???

If you are looking for a Susanna(h) Robson, the most likely one showing on the IGI (controlled extractions) is one baptised 2 March 1712, Newburn. Her father is shown as Matthew Robson. She would thus be around 28 at marriage. Not that unusual in those days.

However, it is important to check parish record fiche/films to verify this information.

There are a couple of Joseph  Harrisons born around that time - Allendale and Newcastle. There may well be others.

This is from a film of the actual Newburn Parish marriage register....

----------------------------------------------------------------------
1740

* June. William Histon of Heddon and Isabel Burne of this parish
* June. Joseph Harrison of Heddon and Susannah Robson of this parish

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

*I could not clearly read the dates of the month of June, but these two marriages were the first and second in June.  The third marriage was on 3rd June. So the transcriptions that show "1st June" as the date of both marriages, are feasible.

The writing in the register was not very clear and was part faded.

GNU, what is your info on Newcastle University transcriptions for this parish?

Hi, I have birth and marriage certs back to 1847..... Another Joseph Harrison marries Mary Scott at Monkwearmouth and then from there 1841 census and the info on the  International Genealogical Index at familysearch.org.
The problem is I don't live near Northumberland/Durham and don't have a michrofiche reader.
I know this index may have mistakes, but that's the only references I have, I have also gained info from the Genuki web site.
Any advice would be gladly rec'd
PS sorry for the delay, have been grandchildren sitting!

Hi Michael, thank you for answering my query and taking the time to do so.
So perhaps the information I got from the LDS family search site was correct (ish).
Would you know if the records for these parishes go further back or where would I likely find them.
Thanks again.
