Postmasters - can I find one!
« on: Monday 27 December 04 22:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

In a census I have a relation who is listed as Postmaster (Ps Off) - presume that means Pensioned off as he was 71 at the time.

Is there anyway I could find out where he worked - as hopefully he moved around!

Is a Postmaster in charge of a Post Office  - or just a glorified postman!!

Cheers

Keith

Hi casalguidi,

Thanks for that - will see what they can come up with - see if they have anything on the web -not used to posting letters - even if my old relation would turn in his grave at that statement!! ::) ::)

Cheers

Hi casalguidi

Just shows what happens when I am given a push in the right direction!!  :D :D

Here is the web site which has pensions listed for all Postmasters who retired from the 1700 onwards. Only trouble is to actually see the records on fische you need to visit London - but it's a great start!!

My great-uncle was Head Postmaster at a town in Lincolnshire. You should also find your ancestor listed in Town Directories for the appropriate area.
Warwicks: Whitehead, Allcock, Atkins, Bayley, Beacham, Bilson, Brooks, Cleaver,Farmer,Gilks, Lucas, Kendall, Oliver, Pickard, Shilton, Underhill.
Lincs: Kendall, Clark, Morley,Vincent, Withers, Barlow,Dawson.
Leics. Vincent
Notts: Bardill, Bugg, Morley, Winfield
Dublin: Brooks, Flood.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for that  - hadn't thought of the Directories - will be only the second one to appear if I do find him!!

Most seem to be paper makers[workers], joiners or bargemen - not likely to be of the right occupation to be classed as Trade.

Cheers
