Keep reading Simon ....... they were in Gallipoli !!

Young boys were lying about their ages ( those two were mascots and then a few years later they joined up ! ) .... but were sent back home when they were found out .... only for them to sign up again !
they were excited about the war .... and compared to what they had - they thought the army would give them "3 hots and a cot " and an easier life !! they got a rude awakening !
If you read the newspaper reports and see the newspaper cuttings and read the ages of some of these boys .... makes you weep !
But at the beginning .... they signed up in droves ..... and all brothers and friends and work mates ..... and then when they died ....... whole communities were wiped out !

I thought that site would help people find their relatives and be able to see photos of them .... maybe for the first time !

the two lads you mention were little alfie boocock and his elder brother james, they had been in the army since 1910,never missed an annual camp, they were given permission by their colonel, to sail with their battalion to egypt, alfie was taken ill at gallipoli and sent to malta, then sent home,he wasnt very happy about being sent back to england,he wanted to go back to gallipoli to be with his mates, they were described by their mates,as very smart and capable young soldiers.
his illness was used as an excuse to get him sent home, because the men were worried that he may get killed.
while on gallipoli, the 2 brothers assisted their father,CQMS george boocock, alfie carried ammo+water up to the front lines.
james remained on gallipoli till the end, happily, both lads and their dad, survived the war
little alfie was kissed and cuddled by most of the women on malta and showered with gifts, they dubbed him the darling of malta.
