Charles II and Nell Gwyn's descendents
« on: Monday 26 November 07 20:06 GMT (UK) »
It is claimed that there are some two thousand living descendants of King Charles II and Nell Gwyn. Ranging from from dukes to dustmen, they include Samantha Cameron (wife of David Cameron) !

Has anyone traced their family back to Charlie and Nell?

Dukes or dustmen can reply.

She only bore him two children: The elder was born in 1670, Charles Beauclerk, who was made Baron Heddington and Earl of Burford and, later, Duke of St. Albans. The younger, James, born a year later died when he was nine.
So all the descendants must come from the Duke of St. Albans  :)
He died on 10 May 1726 at Bath and was buried at Westminster Abbey on 20 May. His brother James, styled Lord Beauclaire, had died at Paris in 1680, and the duke was succeeded by his eldest son, Charles.

Yes I understand the line is through the Duke of St Albans.

That is a very interesting website link you sent -  worth looking at. I can't claim any ancestry of that order but it interests me how "ordinary" people can find they are descended from royalty. I hope someone can make that link through sites like that.

Its always intrigued me too, how some descendants end up peers of the realm and others end up "dustbinmen". I always assume (I know, I shouldn't!  :P) that daughters must have married "below themselves" (ie; a teacher/lawyer/office person) and the line becomes more and more diluted by "lower classes", until you end up with the binman on one branch and a duke on another branch!  ::) :-\ Yet by blood they are both equal!

Yeah, we are all equal, but those with links to the peerage can find out more about their ancestors . Mine didnt leave enough information about themselves for my liking!

But now I've got that peerage site I can find out about the local "nobs" !

She only bore him two children: The elder was born in 1670, Charles Beauclerk, who was made Baron Heddington and Earl of Burford and, later, Duke of St. Albans.

Lauderdale House in Highgate was built about 1582 for Sir Richard Martin, three times Lord Mayor of London. It was supposed to have been let to Nell Gwynn for a time, who lived there with her infant son. There is a story that because the King had not conferred a title on their son, one day she held the child out of an upper window and threatened to drop him unless the King did something for him. 'Stop, Nelly; save the Earl of Burford!', he is supposed to have replied. And afterwards the boy was created Duke of St. Albans.

Well. that's one way to get a title!
