Murdoch Kelburne King
« on: Friday 11 January 08 11:02 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find background information on the above gentleman.  I know he was born in Kilmacolm in 1822, that he became a doctor and was in Hull by 1861.  He seems to have been known just as Dr Kelburne King, without the Murdoch.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

You can get a copy of the actual document from http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
It will cost £1 but minimum number of credits you need to buy is £6.00

Thanks, I'd got that.  What I'm after is some background on the family, his education etc.

John King and Margaret Foster were married in June 1819.
The marriage seems to have been registered in 2 parishes:
4 June 1819 Cardross, Dunbarton 494 0020 0326
7 June 1819 Kilmacolm Renfrew 569 0010 0591

That's not unusual in Scotland.  If a couple came from different parishes, it was common to have the nbanns read in both parishes.

The 2 documents above will also cost £1.00 each from ScotlandsPeople.  It is unlikely they will give you parents names or addresses.

From LDS they had 2 other sons in addition to Murdoch:
James Foster King - born or baptised 5/9/1820
John Carnegie King -   "          "         4/8/24

I've not looked yet but it might be worth investing the £6 with SP to get the 3 documents we know are there and you could use the other £3 looking for other children.

Hope all this helps.
Your post is kind of vague as to what 'background' you are looking for.

Thanks for all your help.  I know I'm being vague, but this is more in the way of local history than family history.  King was a Mayor of Hull and I can find remarkably little about him other than where he came from - what's on the IGI.  I'd like to find out how he came to be in Hull, and anything else which would fill out a short biography of him for a series of articles I'm doing.  There are a couple of Kilmacolm websites which don't offer any way of asking questions.

Hi suttontrust,

Unless you get someone who has been researching actual family, it is very hard to get that type of information on a site that deals with census and BMD. However, I would spend time researching his wife, Mary Burrell, she comes from that part of the world that gave us Sir William Burrell, and the Burrell Collection, may get some mileage out of that if you could prove a connection.

Tom, I take your point but I know that Rootschatters are concerned with far more than census and BMD.  I've been in many a discussion here about all sorts of abstruse local history and family topics.  Your hint about the Burrells is interesting, I'll pursue that.
