Hope I have the right board please can you help. Have family born in Ireland 1831 1853 1851 1874 1873. They came to Cardiff around 1875. How can I find out what part of Ireland they are from. When grandparents and parents married. What website do I use. Many thanks.
Hello heddwch,
You haven't mentioned the names of your Irish ancestors in your message. I had a look at your other posts and guess that it's the McCarthy family that you are researching. Irish Ancestors Surname Search gives the distribution of surnames in Ireland at the time of Griffith's Valuations 1848-64 Co. Cork had the largest number of McCarthys - 2094,
Co. Kerry had less than half of that number - 715 and the third county, Limerick had 280.
www.ireland.com/ancestor/surname You can do a double check if you have two surnames and see if a couple lived in the same parish in a county.
There are four items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.
1. Date of birth, death or marriage.
2. Denomination.
3. Parish
4. Townland.
You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.
There are over nine hundred posts relating to
Co. Cork Mccarthy families on Genforum.
