If you check the 1881 Census for them, it may give where they were born (eg county of Ireland).

The LDS site is as good as any to check the 1881 Census, plus other records.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

Also, Irish Records are gradually coming on line. You could try this site too.

http://www.irish-roots.ie/

and scroll down to the "online research system" link.

There are probably a lot of other sites as well, but these are the basics to get you started. Hopefully somebody help may give you some other sites to try as well. After you have a look at a few sites, and you don't do any good, try another posting here, but don't generallize to much. Try and ask a specific questions which inlcudes as much details as you have eg. names, birthdates, marriage dates, etc. Somebody may find something that you overlooked.

Hello heddwch,

You haven't mentioned the names of your Irish ancestors in your message. I had a look at your other posts and guess that it's the McCarthy family that you are researching. Irish Ancestors Surname Search gives the distribution of surnames in Ireland at the time of Griffith's Valuations 1848-64  Co. Cork had the largest number of McCarthys - 2094,
Co. Kerry had less than half of that number - 715 and the third county, Limerick had 280. www.ireland.com/ancestor/surname You can do a double check if you have two surnames and see if a couple lived in the same parish in a county.

There are four items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Date of birth, death or marriage.
2. Denomination.
3. Parish
4. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

There are over nine hundred posts relating to Co. Cork Mccarthy families on Genforum.

Hello Chris. Thank you for your reply. Thomas Mccarthy Married Hannah Barrett in 1873 in Cardiff. Both born in Ireland. Lived with Mary Mccarthy born 1831 on the1881 census.

Hi there. Just wanted to touch base regarding your query. I am also a descendant a Thomas McCarthy and Hannah Barrett through their youngest daughter Kathleen born in May 1883 in Cardiff. I was told by other members of the family that Kathleens parents came out to Cardiff from Cork, Ireland but have yet to find anything to prove this. Just wondering how your search is going or if we could perhaps exchange some information. I am particularly keen to learn what happened to Thomas and Hannahs children. I was told that Hannah died young and with Thomas working away from home the children were put into a catholic orphanage. I have tracked the family down on the 1881 census but can't find a trace of any of them following this period. Can you help?
Many thanks
