william cookson/dorothy fothergill
« on: Tuesday 11 March 08 11:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

I am trying to trace my roots for the Cookson family.  I understand that William Cookson born abt 1668 married Dorothy Fothergill in 1693 in Penrith. The Cookson were involved in pewtering and were also braziers, before going down a few generations to be Canon of Windsor.
From what I have managed to get from lds site, William's father was Henry Cookeson.
Does anyone have this family on their database? or know where i could find transcriptions for baptisms for St Andrews, Penrith?
I am trying to find out William's siblings details, as well as Henry's details.

Many thanks
Jackie

Hi
Kendal record office should have Penrith records.    Have you tried searching the batch number on the IGI to see if it brings up any others?   Click the batch number at the bottom of the record for William and then just put the surname into the search box.  It might bring up others on that film for you.  Worth a try.

i also saw those igi baptisms.  apparently there is a book that was published by W. Percy Hedley and C. Roy Hudleston, called "Cookson of Penrith, Cumberland and Newcastle upon Tyne" which shows lineage.  Unfortuantely when I went to amazon, they advise not available and not sure when it will be again.
If anyone perhaps knows of that book, i woul really appreciate a lookup on it.

Regards
Jackie

Have you tried inter library loans?   I would expect Penrith library to have it and also the Record Office.  The latter may do you a look up.

A bit far to nip in there then!   I am sure you will find an email if you google them.   I shall be in that area after Easter so if they do say they have a copy in Penrith I might be able to go and look at it for you.
