Clewley
« on: Thursday 13 March 08 14:14 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace an Eleanor CLEWLEY (or CLAWLEY), b. about 1834 who married an Arthur DAVIES, b. about1824, at West Derby in 1867. Their children were:Elizabeth, b. 1863
         Alfred e., b. 1868
         Edith Margaret, b. 1875
         Elizabeth, b 1868
         Herbert E., b. 1869
         Lilian E., b. 1873
         Walter H. b. 1871
         Wilfred H., b. 1865
For a while they lived at 35 Woodhouse Road, Kirkdale.

I am trying to trace my friend's father's history. He was Walter H., b. 1899, son of Walter H. b. 1871.  Any information would be grateful appreciated. I realise that some of the children were born out of wedlock but what is new!!

I think that Eleanor has been married previously. If you look on the Lancashire BMD site there are two entries same year ,same church and I would even think that the older children may not have been born a Davies but just took that name on the remarriage of their mother. What are your views?

It certainly looks like a second marriage

From Lancashire BMD http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

Eleanor MORRIS m. William CLAWLEY, Liverpool St John, 1846

Then, as Dotty says, Eleanor CLAWLEY/MORRIS m. Arthur DAVIES, 1867.

However, looking for the family on the various censuses, all the children seem to be born approx 10 years earlier than you indicate, and "Ellen" is listed as Arthur's wife in 1861 - is this the same person as Eleanor?  Am I looking at the right family?

1861:
RG9/2721; Folio 16; Page 25
80 W Little St, Kirkdale

Arthur DAVIS - Head - 45 - Ship Wright - London
Ellen DAVIS - Wife - 59 - Tichfield, Salop   Age can't be right with a baby son!
Elizabeth DAVIS - Dau - 21 - Liverpool
Edwin John DAVIS - Son - 16 - Clerk - Liverpool
Arthur Bolton DAVIS - Son - 13 - Liverpool
Alfred Harold DAVIS - Son - 7 - Liverpool     image looks like Alfred, but must be Wilfred?
Alfred Edgar DAVIS - Son - 3 - Liverpool
Herbert Edward DAVIS - Son - 2 - Liverpool
Walter Henry DAVIS - Son - 4 mo - Liverpool

1871:
RG10/3788; Folio 111; Page 6
16 [...], Liverpool

Arthur DAVIES - Head - 57 - Shipwright
Ellenor DAVIES - Wife - 47 - Shawbury, Salop
Wilfred H DAVIES - Son - 16 - Clerk - Kirkdale
Alfred E DAVIES - Son - 13 - Scholar - Kirkdale
Herbert E DAVIES - Son - 12 - Scholar - Kirkdale
Walter H DAVIES - Son - 10 - Scholar - Kirkdale
Elizabeth DAVIES -Dau - 18 - Liverpool
Lilian E DAVIES - Dau - 5 - Scholar - Kirkdale
Edith M DAVIES - Dau - 4 - Scholar - Kirkdale
Frances McLean - Niece - 25 - Liverpool
Agnes McLean - Dau - 10 mo - Liverpool
Elizabeth Clawley - Niece - 13 - Scholar - Liverpool

In 1851, Arthur has a different wife:

HO107/2187; Folio 120; Page 19
140 Upper Manor St, Toxteth

Arthur DAVIES - Head - 38 - Shipwright (foreman)
Mary DAVIES - Wife - 38 - Domestic Duties
Alice C DAVIES - Dau - 15 - Scholar
Hannah Y Davies - Dau - 13 - Assistant Teacher
Elizabeth DAVIES - Dau - 11 - Scholar
Edmond C DAVIES - Son - 7 - Scholar
Edwin J DAVIES - Son - 6 - Scholar
Arthur B DAVIES - Son - 5 - Scholar
(All born Liverpool.)

So presuming Ellen and Eleanor are the same person, she ought to be under CLAWLEY on this census.... but I can't spot her at the moment!

Found her....not very helpful, though.

1851:
HO107/2182; Folio 537; Page 29
4 Blackburn Place, Liverpool

Charles E ROWLINS - Head - 65 - Colour Merchant & Manufacturer - London
Jane ROWLINS - Wife - 71 - Benbury, Gloucestershire
Julia ROWLINS - Dau - 40 - Benbury, Gloucestershire
Isabella BLAIR - Servant - 25 - Dumfries
Janet SMITH - Servant - 26 - Kirkudbright
Ellen CLAWLEY - Servant - Widow - 29 - Ellesmere, Shropshire   looks like CLOWLEY

There are a couple of possiblilities for Ellen/Eleanor MORRIS on the 1841 census, but none with parents, so you'll probably need her marriage cert to find out her father's name and get further back.

Hi, Dotty & Rambler,
Thankyou both so much for all your efforts. I had a feeling that it was a second marriage for Eleanor but what a mixed-up family!! I had looked in some of the census returns and the ages do seem to vary from one census to another. I think that Ellen and Eleanor are the same person. I have also found  her name spelt as Ellenor.
Your efforts have now given me a lot of material to work on. Luckily, my friend Alan Davies has gone to the Canaries for 3 weeks, so that gives me time to sort his family out, with the Davies's as well as Eleanors. Many thanks once again.
Kind regards,
Rob.
