any record of edwin weller before 1891 census. have got that far and reached a dead end.was a butcher -wife ellen-married dec 1877. also ,if anyone could help me trace or find ellen's maiden name.

Looks as though poor Edwin was already working in his dads shop at the age of 11

Strange entry there for John P Saunders - its quite possible that Lydia is his mum and she has been previously married - possibly the 1851 census will show Richard with a different wife; alternately he could have been adopted by Richard?

I thought so, Richard is shown on the 1851 Census as a Journeyman Butcher with a wife named Mary from Lewes - all 4 children are listed as well

That also explains why there is a gap of 9 years between Elizabeth and Edwin as Richard had lost a wife and was looking for another (Lydia)

Johns name was Saunders, Lydia is a Goldsmith - did she use her maiden name to get married.  You solve one mystery but giive yourself another - but thats the fun of Family History isnt it ?

The father Richard was the son of Richard (a carpenter) & Mary.

He was baptised at St Nicholas on 15 Jan 1815. 
At that time the family were living in Little Russell Street.
His siblings were as follows
Mary        born Great Russell Street    bapt 1813
Davis       born Shooters Gardens       bapt 1817
Elizabeth born Spring Gardens           bapt 1819
Ann          born Spring Gardens           bapt 1822

Mary (the grandmother) was Mary Belton.  The IGI records that Mary Belton and Richard the carpenter married in St Nicholas, Brighton in 1812.

Yes, I had noticed the Richard, son of Richard entries - but in my mind I was not sure I was on the right track there mainly because of the occupation of Richard - A Carpenter. 
It seems miles apart to go from Carpenter to Butcher!
