Marriages 1895 Cape Town South Africa
« on: Sunday 27 April 08 03:17 BST (UK) »
Army Africa & India.
Does anybody know where I can obtain a copy of a marriage of a soldier in Cape Town S.Africa, 1895 ?
Have been able to find birth records of all the children [thanks to jorose rootschat] but marriage is not comming up on indexes?
Some documents say Robert Anderson..... Royal Highlanders..... and the others...... 91st Regiment.
Have been google...ing for hours.....getting lots of info but getting more confussed  with the regiments.
Have ordered a birth certificate of oldest child born in Cape Town South Africa......but am sure it will not give too much detail on this Robert Anderson.....well if it is like a normal GRO certificate.
Have b/c of a daughter born back in Edinburgh 1904. it had no details that usual Scotland certs have, seemed to be based on English ones no marriage, parents details etc!!!
They went back to Indian and had more children after this date.

1st Battn Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) were in Cape Town at the right time.
In fcat it was half the battalion, the other half were in Mauritius.

Which documents say 91st Regt? They were the Argyll Highlanders, but were only the 91st pre-1881.
Post-1881 they were the 1st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.
Either way, they weren't in Cape Town in 1895.

Where have you looked for the marriage? The GRO regimental marriages index is the place to go.

Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Thank you neil1821,

This is what I have so far found; [I already knew names of children from mothers death certificate]

Where does one in Australia get to view the GRO regimental marriage index? it does not seem to be on line.

Thanks for your help.

Cape Town, Sitapur, Fort George matches with the deployment of the 1st Royal Highlanders.

I don't understand the references to the 91st Regt. As I said before, there was really no such thing as the 91st post-1881.
What's more they weren't the right regiment anyway. 42nd Regt were the Royal Highlanders! Bit of a puzzle.

GRO regimental marriages here:
http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp

Pay-to-view though I'm afraid.

There are 2 Robert Andersons in the 1st Royal Highlanders in the Boer War:
3763 Sgt Robert Anderson
6452 Pte Robert Anderson

I'd say the first is more likely to be your man.
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Thank you neil,
Maybe he gave incorrect info..who knows, he was listed as a tailor on the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth.
Maybe the people employed to transcribe the documents made a mistake?
He does have a second name .....Robert Alexander Anderson...His wife Barbara was only 20 when they married S. Africa.
I need the marriage certificate to prove some of this information.
Thanks so much for your help.
