Patrick Loughlin - different birth places
« on: Friday 06 June 08 04:52 BST (UK) »
Hi

Just putting this out there to see if anyone could give me a fresh angle on this little problem of mine.

My g-grandfather Patrick Loughlin was born in Galway (Well i'm very sure) in 1861.

Trouble is that on the 1891 census just a couple years after he came to England he lists his birthplace as BALLYWOUNESS, IRELAND

Then after he has married and got children on the 1901 census he lists his birthplace as TUONE, IRELAND

Can't find anything that matches either name exactly or even a little mis-spelt.
Given that i've found my g-grandfather's name mis-spelt three different times at least i'm more then sure one or both of these place names are mis-spelt.

Any thoughts welcome

Thankyou

Jonathan

Can you tell us details from 1891 census so I can see scanned image? One possibilty is Ballyweeann in Co. Galway.

Sorry haven't got exact page numbers (all my infomation is at home - on holiday) but if its any help i could give you more details.

On 1891 census he was listed as lodging with a Thomas Connolly who is his future brother-in-law.

3 Princess Street, Heywood, Lancashire

Thomas Connolly 40 Head
Harriet   Connolly 32 Wife
Joshua   Miller       27 Lodger
Patrick   Loughnah  26 Lodger

Again you can see the name mis-spelt and job is listed as carter.

Hopefully you can get the info you want from the image from this if not i'll wait till i can get hold of the exact details when i go home.

Thanks

Jonathan

Had a look at census and it's hard to know what it would be since there are so many mistakes- Partrick instead of Patrick, surname written as Loughnah- looks like his birthplace is Bally _o-ness but nothing matches (in Galway or Ireland)- closest I could come was Ballinlawless but not at all sure.

My guess isn't in Galway at all but I think it is Ballyhaunis - which is Mayo - but there is a road to Tuam from there  ;D

Mr Connolly was born Mayo.

He may well have been born between the two places. :-\

Thanks for all the help.

Yep this one is going to remain a mystrey for some time. Just if i could pin it down to one county then it would be a start.
I guess two isn't the end of the world.
Not planning on going anytime soon but would visiting Ireland be of any use to me?
I'm thinking not that much because i don't have a small enough area to place him yet.

as you say - not accurate enough yet I suppose. Mind you I would go to Mayo for any reason  ;D
The census looks very much like Ballyhouness  (an 'h' rather than a 'w') which I am confident could be heard or interpreted as Ballyhaunis but there is always a doubt. It does border North galway and Roscommon. My sister's in laws came from 'Ballyhaunis' but records were Roscommon.
I think I saw that the Connollys show Kilmaine, Mayo on one census?? But that is in another direction according to the map.
Do you have his marriage details for his father's name - that may help eventually.

best wishes
