SELWOOD, William James - Birth Certificate
« on: Sunday 29 June 08 15:03 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the birth certificate for my grandfather, William James Selwood.

His death certificate from 1959 gives his age as being 72, which means he was born about 1887. His marriage certificate from 1918 shows his age as being 29, meaning he was born about 1889. His railway pension records show his date of birth as being 29 April 1887.

On his marriage certificate, his father is also shown as William James Selwood, Deceased, Petty Officer R.N. The only other information I have from family members is that he grew up in Gloucester. A cousin of mine has found census entries in 1891 and 1901, which may or may not be him as he is shown as James Selwood. His father is also shown as James Selwood and his mother as Fanny Selwood. Both censuses have the correct age and both are recorded in Gloucester. If they are correct his place of birth is shown as Thame, Oxfordshire.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards

Sorry to "bump" this one back up, but is it possible his birth was never registered. I know civil registration became compulsory in 1837, but I assume some births were never registered for one reason or another.

Hi

Civil registration started in 1837 but did not become compulsory until 1874 so his birth should have been registered if he was born in England, perhaps he was born abroad as his father was in the navy

Hi Rosie

That certainly is a possibility, in which case I am well and truly stuffed  ???

I really cannot make any progress with this one at all. Thanks for responding anyway.
