Powell
« on: Wednesday 06 August 08 15:57 BST (UK) »
Hi!
I know my paternal ggrandmother was b. at Llantilio Crossenny monmouthshire [various spellings! in 1836. She married Thomas Powell of Abbeydore Hef. two known children. Don't know when the marriage took place or where.
Named Mary Jane Powell she was always known as Jane, this is how she was on 1871 1881 1891 census living at Wormbridge/Abbeydore Hef. I can find nothing before these dates. Her daughter, Julia, was my Grandmother born about 1863/64. any help much appreciated.

Do you have the birth record of Julia or her sibling - this would give Mary Jane Powell's maiden name.  It may then be a little easier to find the marriage.
Please post what you know about Julia and her sibling if you do not have their birth records and someone may be able to help.

Do you mean her maiden name is Powell?

Thank you for your replies, Just to make things interesting, Powell married Powell! I actually have this marriage cert. which states Jane's father as being Charles Powell a Carpenter. This could well be my GGrandparents.
The problem I have is finding Jane and her family prior to this wedding, or a baptism for her. again many thanks.

This looks like the family for Thomas, same area/address as census with Jane.

Do details fit with marriage cert that his father is Richard ?

1841 - HO107 Piece 427 Book 1
Birches,  Abbey Dore

Richard Powell 55  ag lab
Mary Powell 45
John Powell 24 ag lab
William Powell 12
Richard Powell 9
Thomas Powell 5
Elizabeth Powell 18 mths

Also Jane is a widow in 1901.  1881/1891 has Hoskins children with them.  There is a Jane Hoskins right area for pob in 1841, but this maybe a red herring  :-\

Well you know the marriage cert is correct if it has details to match your Thomas.  Possibly her father died pre 1841 census, mother may have remarried  :-\

Don't know what else to suggest...
