hi Evie
i cant find anything on my maternal grandfathers side, Edward Wilson. all i no is that he had a brother Edmund.
my G was sent to sea at about age 12 as a cabin boy he was born 1870S
he was married twice, second time to my Nana Margaret Trainor, i think his first wife died. there were 2 sons from this marrage, teddy and bunty.

i believe the family were from cumbria, my mother grew up in gateshead, newcastle upon Tyne.

my great aunt may (maria) trainor had a baby girl who she gave up for adoption  around the late 1930S-1945. babies first name Pauline, she kept in touch with the adopted family and even had a wedding photo, my aunt and the adoptive mother even took her to visit my Nana when she was about nine.
Pauline married a prison officer in the 1950S and emigrated to Canada where he worked in the prison service over there.
i only found out about her by accident from another aunt.
any help you could give me would be most appreciated

Hi :)

This is a difficult one. I wonder if anyone else has any suggestions as to where to start looking.

There seems too many options on the census. We need to narrow down the age range.

To start -

Was Edmund younger or older than Edward?

Do you know what year your Nana got married and how old they were at the time of marriage? It might say on the marriage certificate.

What year was Teddy (or was it Edward) and Bunty born? Is Bunty male?

Or is Bunty your Mum and if so is this her baptism name or a 'pet' name for something else?

I did find a Maria Trainor in the free BMD for gateshead, when was she born about?

If any of the latter are still alive you will have to PM me with the details.

Thanks

Evie

Hi,
I can help with the Trestrail side of the family.  Trestrail is a Cornish name. The Trestrail/ Mcgarrell connection comes from a marriage between Caroline Charlotte Trestrail ( born O-D 1882 Truro 5c140) & John H Mcgarrell (J-M 1914 Gateshead 10a 1559). Caroline's parents were Thomas G. Powning Trestrail & Matilda Goldsack who married  J-S 1882 Redruth 5c360. They were in Gateshead for the 1891 Census. Thomas was born J-M 1861 Redruth 5c 307 (in Phillack (Hayle, Cornwall). I can provide further infomation, census, bdms, if interested.

Dave.

Hi Kathleen,
I bet that Caroline's mother ( Matilda Goldsack) was also Jewish!
There was only one other child born to Thomas & Matilda - William George- born  O-D 1883 Gateshead 10a 882.  I am missing Thomas from the 1881 Census so am wondering was he in Gateshead, returned to Cornwall to get married & the family moved up when he had settled?

William George married Susan Monkhouse J-S 1906 Gateshead 10a 1678. Their children were:
Margaret Isobel A-J 1908 Tynemouth 10b 341
Lottie J-S 1910 Tynemouth 10b 204
Wilhelmina Monkhouse A-J 1912 Gateshead 10a 2056
Susan A-J 1914 Southsheilds 10a 1976  Died O-D 1915 Gateshead 10a 1073
Marjorie Matilda J-M 1916 Gateshead 10a 1829
Susan (Monkhouse) died A-J 1916 Gateshead 10a 1077 age 30 & William George married Ada Barker J-S 1916 Gateshead 10a 1490a. A "George William" died J-S 1930 Croydon 2a323 aged 46.
