1851 census - help understanding please
« on: Wednesday 17 September 08 01:01 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

A friend has printed out a page of the 1851 census for me with some of my family on it:-

Bottom 7 rows the EGERTON family:-

Can you help me with the occupation of THOMAS please?   I cannot read it.  There is also a cross in the box for deaf-dumb/blind for him and his wife SARAH;  does that mean precisely that?

From what I can gather, all our families were miners, but I cannot read what it says there!

Also, the birth place, I can read Mow Cop, Cheshire, but cannot read the other I think it says Aper Green?

Many thanks
Jackie

Hi Jackie,

Occupation for Thomas is Waggoner, and birthplace may be Spen Green, Cheshire which is about 4 miles from Mow Cop

genuki map here: http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/gazplace?CCC=CHS,GR=SJ810600,PLACE=SPEN%20GREEN

Kind regards,
Barbara  :)

Hi Jackie

They are actually in Staffordshire?
Reference is:
HO107 -  Piece: 2002 /  Folio: 266 /  pg17 and 18

And the family continues over to the next page:

1851: Mow Cop - Village of Mow Cop, Brerehurst, Staffordshire
(Ecclesiatic Parish of St Thomas Mow Cop)
Head: Thomas EGERTON 53, Waggoner, b Aper Green?? , Cheshire
Wife: Sarah 47, b Mow Cop Cheshire (sic, dittioed as Cheshire)
Son: William 23, unm, Coal Miner, b Mow Cop Staffs
Son: Joseph 18, unm, Coal Miner, b Mow Cop Staffs
Dau: Eliza 15, unm, b Mow Cop Staffs
Son: lewis 12, coal miner, b Mow Cop Staffs
Son: Edwin 10, scholar, b b Mow Cop Staffs
Son: John 6, scholar,  b Mow Cop Staffs
Dau: Novelia 3,  b Mow Cop Staffs
Visitor: William EGERTON 59, married, farm lab. b Masford? Masfield? Bank, Cheshire

The cross marks in the Deaf/Dumb/Blind ciolumn - are more that most likely just "counting" or "checking" marks made by the enumerator - they often used this column as such (I've seen some census pages where ever single person on the page has a tick in that column  ;D  ;D. If the person was indeed deaf etc, they would write a word in that column, such as for eg:  deaf, dumb. blind since birth and also  insane idiot, imbecile and so on....

Cheers

In 1861 Sarah is a widow, sadly, as maybe Thomas' birthplace may have been clearer, and in 1841 only whether or not born in the county is stated, no town, although as I said, it's probably Spen Green

She is living with son James and family, and no sign of any marks this time in the end column for any of them.  :)

Full details if you don't already have them.

Hi Barbara and Ambly,

Thank you both so much for you help and information.

Waggoner!  Of Course!  I thought the W was a U so was going along those lines doh!!!!!!

Yes, it's all coming together now thanks.  I know they were all originally from Mow Cop and then they all migrated North to Wigan area for the mines.

Thanks also about the marks in the column;  I did wonder how could they be working if 'afflicated'!!!  So thanks for that.

You guys are brilliant; off to the library to see what else I can find out.

Barbara; you say you have full details???  I don't have anything really, I am starting to piece things together then I can apply for birth certificates and the like,, so if you have anything, I would be rather grateful.

Thanks again.
Jackie
