Lookup for 1901
« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 12:55 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the family Ward as follows:
Edwin Ward, Labourer
His wife Cela Ward (nee Lee)
and possibly one child Minnie.
They had four children all born around that date and onwards.
Minnie, Nonnie, Rainy (31st July 1905) and Britannia.
Their address was 17 Garden Cottages, Lower Borough, Chislehurst, Kent ( also listed under Foots Cray)
I cant seem to find the marriage of Edwin and Cela, and I'm wondering if it would have been possible they weren't married, even if it is listed on the birth certificate of Rainy.
Could anyone help me please?
Regards
Andrea

Hi, I only have the date for Rainy Ward 31st August 1905. This is my mother in laws mother, who went into foster care along with the other three girls. My MIL didn't know her grandparents names until I applied for the birth certificate.
History has it that the parents weren't married, but it says they were on the birth certificate. I have searched for ages but cant find anything.
I can send you the birth certificate if you like.
Regards
Andrea

I have been looking around for the other children's birth reg's - not really come up with much - do you know which were older-and which were younger than Rainey??

They are unusual forenames -so would have thought we could have found them.

I have found Brittania Ward b in 1850's -I know she wouldn't be one of them -but thought maybe it could be a Wrd "family name"???

I have found a Brittania lee -birth reg Jun qtr 1920 mother's maiden name lee, IOW 2b 1272 -but suspect this isn't a sister either??

Do you know who the girls married ??

There is a birth reg
Nona Doris Ward mar qtr 1902 chertsey Surrey 2a 45 - I suspect this Nona at sometime married a Mr Gosney???

The only Ward marriage I can find to a Cela/Celia/Cecilia is
in 1900  Camberwell district 1d 967 - Alfred Ward to Celia minnie Ward???

They appear on 1901 census with no children

There is also a birth reg for a Celia minnie Ward in 1870's

I'll wait until there are any more snippets of information you find which may help in the search.

If any information is about the living, please don't post here but send a PM.

Hi Andrea,
With the name surname Lee and the area you may have a Romany/Gypsy family connection. I believe there are dedicated romany family sites that could be of help to you.
Some one here is sure to know the links you need.

Hi Andrea,
I have done a bit more poking arround for you.
I think your Cela Ward Nee Lee  is really CLARRISSA C LEE bn 1881  Sheerness Isle of Sheppey Kent. Daughter of Silvester and Celia Lee who were Traveling Showman ( Romany .s??)
On the 1901 Census    Clarrisa C Lee is shown as "Married" Daughter in law age 22 living at 138 Clive Rd Portsmouth with Samuel Lee retired Blacksmith and his family.there are 2 grandsons,at the address possibly Clarrissa,s children shown Harold J Lee age 8 and Alfred R Lee age 2.  No sign of any Ward.       The transcriber for Ancestry has incorrectly assumed Clarrisa is the Spouse of Alfred Lee at the same address.
I think I am correct in all this but please verify it for yourself, Especially whether the boys are hers !!!
                                                       Good Luck Rog :) :)

Hi, thank you for all your work, I am now totally confused...so this is all the information I have at the moment:
Minnie is the eldest and Britannia the youngest. Brit married a man called George Cox and had two daughters Joan & Audrey. Nonnie married Albert no children.
My MIL's father, always told her, her mother was illegitimate and was descended from Gypsies.
Sorry I don't have anymore clues. I have only just started to search.
Cheers
Andrea
