Thank so much for all this Kris. I was interested to see that Joseph had (presumably) a brother James having children at the same time in Horton.

In the 1881 census (by which time they had moved to Downton in Wiltshire), there are just four people in Joseph and Julia's household: Mum and Dad, Emily (aged 29) and a son James aged 21.

In all the baptisms you have found, there doesn't seem to ba a James, but he, at least, lived to be 21 unlike so many of his siblings. How tragic all those early deaths are - not just as babies but even as old as 11, when you would reasonably have expected them to be well on their way to adulthood.

Anyway, thanks so much for this whole series of very clever lookups. I now know way more than I ever expected to about this family, and much of it is due to your perseverance. Thanks so much.

Kind regards

Phil

Hello, we have graffiti on a stone mullion window frame in our old farmhouse in south Wiltshire 'John Coles 1709'. We presume he was a tenant farmer or worker at the time.

Would be great to know more if its the same John Coles.

Thank you.

Jonathan
